SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another mural has been painted on a South Lake Tahoe building - this time on the side of Hotel Azure at the corner of Lake Tahoe and Rufus Allen boulevards.
This is the fifth mural coordinated through the Tahoe Art League and approved by the City of South Lake Tahoe Arts, Culture, and Tourism Commission.
Local Artist Craig Newman has completed the new mural, an iconic picture of Emerald Bay that incorporates Craig's unique painting style using bright, vibrant colors and whimsical, swirling patterns for the sky and lake. Even though the mural is nestled between trees, it is hard to miss!
Born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, Craig became an artist in his living room while following along with Bob Ross using crayons. His pieces capture the rhythm and flow of nature with vibrant colors that stand out while also soothing the senses.
For over 20 years, Craig has both studied under and been inspired by local artist Phyllis Shafer. He says she taught him how to capture movement, light, and the emotion that takes place in the fleeting moment. Craig's favorite style of painting includes surreal landscapes based in Tahoe and the surrounding areas, mandalas, portraits, and murals. His murals and artwork can be seen all over Nevada and the Tahoe Basin in businesses and homes alike.
This mural was coordinated by the Tahoe Art League and funded by the City's Cannabis grant funding as well as by two other local businesses - Blue Dog Pizza and Athletex Gym. Both of these businesses had murals previously installed through the Art League and they agreed to help "Pay it Forward" by funding future murals on other businesses.
One final mural funded through Tahoe Art League is currently being painted at Integrity Locksmith by local artists Nick Akins and Drew Doiron. Keep a look out for their progress.
