Volunteers sought as Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe opens new South Lake Tahoe office

Event Date:
December 10, 2019 - 5:00pm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) will be opening an office in South Lake Tahoe to better serve the community and will be celebrating their grand opening on December 10, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The new location will be in mid-town adjacent to the former Sato Sushi, 3438 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. They will be offering a full list of services from cat adoptions to free vaccination clinics.

HSTT stepped in after the former Lake Tahoe Humane Society was forced to close after their former executive director embezzled approximately $50,000 from the nonprofit. She served time after being sentenced in 2018 and is on a repayment plan to pay back the funds.

Care and resources for pets and their owners across the entire Lake Tahoe region ia provided by HSTT. They began providing services in South Lake Tahoe in January 2019 and has already helped almost 100 local residents get their pets sterilized. They’ve also held two microchip and vaccination clinics, providing free vaccines, microchips and wellness checks to community members. HSTT will offer these clinics quarterly in 2020.

"The HSTT offers a wide array of important services and community assistance, including low-cost spay and neuter procedures, but we cannot do it alone,” said Stephanie Nistler, Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe’s executive director.

The organization is actively recruiting volunteers and seeking donations. All money donated will go directly toward helping animals in the South Lake community and maintaining important programs such as:

- Low-cost spay/neuter services for dogs and cats
- FREE Pitbull/Chihuahua Spay & Neuter
- FREE Vaccination & Microchip Clinics
- Pet Pantry offering free pet food to community members in need
- Pet Assisted Therapy
- Community Cat-Trap, Neuter, Return
- Humane Education
- Pet Adoptions

The South Lake Tahoe office will have cats available for adoption starting in January but will not offer dog adoptions from this location. They encourage people to visit their shelter in Truckee or El Dorado County Animal Services to adopt their next dog.
