US50 over Echo Summit closed due to fatal collision

FRIDAY UPDATE: - Two people died after a head-on collision on US50 at Echo Summit on Thanksgiving Day. At approximately 5:35 p.m. on November 28, the crash occurred between a green 2001 Toyota Sequoia (traveling west) and a silver 2015 Chevrolet Traverse (traveling east) near US-50 east of Audrain Way. The Toyota and Chevrolet collided head-on in the eastbound lane for unknown reasons. UPDATE 10:26 p.m.- The California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, and El Dorado County Sheriff have cleared the scene of the fatal collision. Traffic is now moving. We'll be updating this story on Friday as more details are made available.

UPDATE 9:23 p.m.: Per the California Highway Patrol, one-way controlled traffic should start shortly.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - US50 at Echo Summit has been closed this evening due to a collision resulting in a fatality. At 5:33 p.m. Thanksgiving evening, CHP reported a two-vehicle collision with major injuries.

Careflight was scheduled to land at the Caltrans Maintenance Station at Echo for one person.

As of 8:45 p.m., the westbound road is still closed at Chiapa, and traffic is backed up to Sierra at Tahoe for those heading east.

The estimate for reopening is 9:45 p.m.
