Now that the Tahoe Valley Area Plan has been approved for the Y area of South Lake Tahoe, plans are moving forward to create a greenbelt area that would improve connectivity, create more biking, walking and play space, as well as implementing stormwater improvements to keep Tahoe blue, and the community green.

Funds in the amount of $6.8 million are headed to the California side of Lake Tahoe after the California Tahoe Conservancy Board accepted a federal grant on Thursday that will reduce wildfire risk. Fuel treatments on up to 1,800 acres of high fire risk areas of land owned by state and local jurisdictions as well as private property will occur over the next six years

Westbound commercial trucks are once again allowed on the State Route 431 Mt. Rose Highway now that the Nevada Department of Transportation has substantially completed a project to reconstruct the truck escape ramp.

With a record number of local residents recently vying for two open City Council positions, many are hoping there is a renewed interest in filling vacancies on four city commission and board spots as well.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is looking for residents to fill 19 city commission and board positions on the Planning Commission, Recreation Commission, Airport Land Use Commission and the Building/ADA Board of Appeals. Applications are being accepted until the deadline of December 2, 2016.

PLANNING COMMISSION:

The monthly meeting of the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission on November 10 will have four major projects to consider, along with hearing an appeal of a vacation rental permit denial.

For the Halloween season, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is reminding parents and children of some lifesaving hints when planning costumes and a special day of trick-or-treating.

When buying costumes for Halloween:

Check the labels and make sure they are made of flame retardant materials.

Materials made of 100% Polyester are best suited for a Halloween costume.

The use of commercial flame retardant sprays is not recommended.

Avoid Halloween costumes that are loose or baggy to prevent fabric from coming in contact with any open flames.

The South Lake Tahoe chapter of the Citizen's Climate Lobby recently asked all ten of the candidates their views on climate change, green buildings and our carbon footprint and how they can make a change if elected.

The Citizen's Climate Lobby is an organization focused on national policies to address climate change, and the South Lake Tahoe chapter is one of 354 in the United States and abroad.

Patricia Sussman of the local chapter said just five of the candidates responded to their questions.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday will feature the following topics:

Commercial Floor Space - Doctors Steve Leman and Clint Purvance have applied for Commercial Floor Space allocations (CFA) for three projects at the Y area. Together they are asking for 6,170 square feet of CFA from the City's allotment for a building at 941 Emerald Bay Road. Leman himself is asking for 4,621 square feet at 2215 South Avenue and another 4,025 at 1072 4TH Street. He also wants to purchase another 28,940 Square Feet of 1B Banked Land Coverage from the City.

The Placer County Supervisors today approved one portion of the controversial Martis Valley Project on 1,052 acres adjacent to the Northstar California Resort, west of State Route 267.

Known at Martis Valley West, the project will add residential and commercial uses while permanently preserving 6,376-acres known as the East Parcel. Even though the acres will be preserved, 760 units and 6.6 acres of commercial area previously approved for the East via the Martis Valley Community Plan will be transferred to the West Parcel.

The owner of Advanced Financial Services (AFS) in Placerville pleaded guilty to filing more than 250 false claims for refunds from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) along with two of her employees. They all face large fines and years in jail.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is still trying to work out a deal with the Halferty Development Company, a $4 million sale of the developable portions of the lots known as the "Knights Inn Properties."

During Tuesday's City Council meeting a purchase agreement was scheduled to be voted on, but SLT City Manager Nancy Kerry had to pull it off the agenda.

"We are still working on it," Kerry told South Tahoe Now. "We are still negotiating and have some issues to work out."

Lake Tahoe Unified School District recently received an energy efficiency rebate check from Liberty Utilities in the amount of $5,054.10, the largest given out this year.

“We’re always happy to reward customers with a rebate whenever they install energy efficient measures that reduce their electric use, especially when it’s a public entity like a school,” stated Randy Kelly, Liberty Utilities’ Operations Manager.

The Village in Squaw Valley, a proposed redevelopment proponents say will reestablish the resort as a premier mountain resort destination and ensure its sustainable future, in on the agenda of the Placer County Planning Commission on Thursday, August 11.

Here is some news to take a little “paws” with...introducing the newest trainee on the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District team, Gunner. He is a member of the Tahoe Douglas Explosive Ordinance Disposal team and, once he completes his training, will join six other dogs as canine resources for the Northern Nevada Bomb Technicians Task Force.

The other EOD dogs are from UNR-Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Reno Police Department, and three from Reno Airport TSA.
