Weather - South Lake Tahoe will have a high today of 45 and a low tonight of 18. Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 45. East wind around 5 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. West wind around 5 mph.

With lots of snow we are getting lots of visitors to the slopes around the basin, and a lot of these visitors bring their dogs to enjoy the vacation with the family. Sadly some of these pups get lost which is extra stressful as they are not in a familiar location. We recently have had two visiting dogs who went missing for over a week, one was found, injured but is going to be okay, while the other was found but the extreme outside conditions got the better of his and sadly he passed the night he was found.

Winter has been welcomed back to the Lake Tahoe basin after a few years of drought and less-than-average snowfall, but a resurgence of winter brings with it not only more visitors to enjoy the snow, but poor traveling conditions for the driver.

Special statement from the National Weather Service: Due to cold temperatures last night, many roads across Western Nevada, the Sierra, and Northeast California will remain snow and ice covered for the morning commute. Allow extra time to reach your destination. Brisk winds will continue today, especially in Mono and Mineral counties, and points south.

The most recent storm to hit the Lake Tahoe basin brought with it more rain than snow, but it allowed the lake to rise .20 feet which equals 7.89 billion gallons of water.

The Truckee River in Reno rose 3.71 feet and Donner Lake added 1.72 feet, or 385 million gallons of water.

Ski areas in the basin all got a boost in snow with Mt. Rose seeing the most at 16 inches. Heavenly added 4" and both Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood saw 10" added to their base.

Lake Valley and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks and the U.S Forest Service have plans to continue widespread prescribed fire operations beginning February 1.

Lake Valley operations: 50 acres northeast of Lake Tahoe Airport off of Barbara Avenue. Planned ignition February 3. 10 days of burn down time. Smoke expected to travel southwest.

Two men trying to evade arrest on January 22, ended up calling 911 and telling officers they were freezing to death and in fear of dying.

Tristen Crossland and Derek Dion were the lone occupants of a car that was pulled over by a California Fish and Wildlife officer on the morning of Friday, January 22, near Highway 50 and Wrights Lake Road when they decided to flee on foot.

Weather - South Lake Tahoe will have a high of 48 and a low tonight of 34. Today: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 48. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south in the morning. Tonight: A chance of rain and snow after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Two cars collided on Highway 50 near Glenbrook at 9:40 p.m. Friday, January 16, leaving a Los Angeles man dead.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers investigating the crash say a Silver 2009 Toyota Corolla, driven by Carlos Ortega Gomez of Mexico, was traveling eastbound. A white 2014 Subaru Impreza driven by 59-year-old Carson City resident Virgilio Ballesteros was traveling westbound in the slow lane.

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday to 10:00 a.m. Sunday. Heaviest snow from midnight to 8:00 a.m. Sunday. 8 to 14 inches above 7000 feet, 3 to 8 inches at lake level.

Unusual snowpack conditions in the Sierra Nevada are contributing to a type of avalanche problem that in the past decade has rarely been widespread in the region.

That’s according to the Sierra Avalanche Center, a non-profit organization that partners with the U.S. Forest Service to observe and analyze snow conditions in the Lake Tahoe area and beyond.

“There could be avalanches in places that have never seen avalanches before,” said Brandon Schwartz, lead forecaster for the center.

The New Year is getting off to a phenomenal start with snow falling at Lake Tahoe. It seems long ago since we’ve had snow around the lake, but as California and Nevada continue to grapple with four years of drought and water shortages, the snow couldn’t be falling at a better time.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service are planning to resume prescribed fire operations during the week of January 10-15, 2016.

They will be concentrating on six areas (matching with letters on the attached map):

A. Emerald Bay State Park - 38 acres. Ignite 1/11/16. Expected duration of ignition and smoke, one month.

B. Sugar Pine Point State Park - 26 acres. Ignite 1/11/16. Expected duration of ignition and smoke, one month.

3:00 p.m. update 1/5/16: Well, the storm had another surge and chain controls are back up over Echo from three miles east of Kyburz to Meyers and on 80 from one mile east of Baxter to the Donner Lake interchange.

220 p.m. update 1/5/16: Chain controls over Echo Summit (Hwy 50) and Donner Pass (I80) have been lifted.
