Special LTUSD meeting to discuss Sierra House Elementary

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m.to discuss approval of funds needed to get Sierra House Elementary opened by the beginning of the school year.

Since a Labor Day 2018 fire, the school which housed grades K-5 has been closed with students split between South Tahoe Middle School and Al Tahoe Elementary.

There have been concerns in the community the school wouldn't be ready to open in August.

Overnight closures of SR28 for final roadway striping near Incline Village

Overnight road closures will take place on State Route 28 south of Incline Village June 17 and 18 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) places final roadway striping as part of the installation of the State Route 28 shared used path.

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village and the U.S. 50 junction from 8:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m. nightly June 17 and 18 as final roadway striping is placed on the highway.

Emerald Bay boulder incident draws $50,000 fine for contractor and Caltrans

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All involved parties reached a settlement today concerning the May 2018 boulder rolling incident at Emerald Bay. At that time, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) received a complaint about the contractors hired to build a retaining wall at Emerald Bay on SR89. In that complaint, a video was provided that showed equipment pushing a large boulder over the edge of the road as crews cheered. As the boulder rolled it took out or damaged several trees, including a majestic Sugar Pine.

NDOT wraps up series of overnight closures of SR28 in Incline Village

The Nevada Department of Transportation has wrapped up a series of overnight full road closures on State Route 28 shared used path ahead of schedule. The roadway closure allowed for installation of pre-fabricated bridge decks on the three-plus mile shared-use path under construction between southern Incline Village and Sand Harbor State Park.

Both directions of SR 28 were closed overnight on May 14 and crews had planned to work to continue overnight May 15 but that has been canceled.

No overnight closure of SR28 at Lake Tahoe needed May 1

The Nevada Department of Transportation has wrapped up the first in a series of overnight full road closures on State Route 28 ahead of schedule and will not need to close again tonight, May 1.

Completion date of Fanny Bridge/ SR89 project pushed out, final stage may start in 2020

The SR89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe has not progressed as expected and completion will not happen in 2019 though lots of work is scheduled.

Weather, utilities and construction scheduling have put it well behind the original 2018 planned completion and now construction work will be getting off to a late start in 2019 because of high water levels at the lake and Truckee River after an above average winter of snow and rain. Crews are expecting to start around mid-June.

Navigating through South Lake Tahoe road construction

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With three major road construction projects on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe this summer, both residents and visitors alike will have their patience put to the test as they navigate local roads.

Not only will CalTrans have three major projects on Highway 50 between Echo Summit and Al Tahoe Boulevard, but the City of South Lake Tahoe will have their own road projects going on at Sierra Boulevard and Gardner Mountain.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After this summer's work is completed on Sierra Boulevard, those driving, walking and riding on the road will enjoy sidewalks, Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and see the new water quality improvements.

The $5.5 million project on the .6 mile long Sierra Boulevard is funded mostly by grants.

Updates on South Lake Tahoe's Bijou Marketplace

Barton Health nurses vote for one-day strike if necessary

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The nurses at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe who voted to organize in November 2017 have voted to strike for one day if necessary should their union and management fail to come to an agreement on issues that concern them at the bargaining table.

"Progress has stalled out," said Barton nurse Beth Dameral. "We haven't heard back on the healthcare issue."

SR28 south of Incline Village to close overnight Dec. 11-13

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There will be full road closures on State Route 28 south of Incline Village for two nights this week so the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) can install bridges on the new shared used path.

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village near Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor State Park from 8:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. nightly Dec. 11 to Dec. 13. The road closures are scheduled for overnight hours to reduce impact on heavy daytime traffic. The closures are weather dependent and subject to change.

Drake Niven ~ 8/2/49 - 11/7/18

Drake Niven, a long-time Lake Tahoe contractor, died on November 7 of a heart attack suffered during surgery at Carson-Tahoe Medical Center. He was 69.

He was well known in the local building community and built custom homes all around the lake. Drake was also instrumental in helping friends and neighbors re-build their homes after the Angora Fire. He just recently retired from building due to health issues.

NDOT finishes ahead of schedule, no more Lake Tahoe road closures this week

The Nevada Department of Transportation has wrapped up the first in a series of overnight full road closures on State Route 28 ahead of schedule.

Lane closures over on Kingsbury Grade, NDOT project nearing completion

STATELINE, Nev. - Lane closures in place on Kingsbury Grade (SR 207) this summer have been removed now that the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has substantially completed a project to enhance roadway drainage pipes on the Carson Valley side of the road.

Motorists can still expect some intermittent minor shoulder and other closures.

Motorists can expect delays on SR 89 between Truckee and Squaw Valley

Caltrans is alerting motorists to anticipate delays on a section of State Route 89 for the next several weeks as culverts along the highway are removed and replaced.

Work started Monday on Highway 89 between Truckee and Squaw Valley to replace the drainage pipes. Granite Construction is the contractor and will work weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., weather permitting, under one-way reversing traffic control with flaggers. Motorists should anticipate delays of up to 15 minutes.

The work involves removing and replacing six culverts and making improvements to three others.

Lane closure Sunday night near Fanny Bridge

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a lane closure near the Caltrans Maintenance Yard on SR 89 heading into Tahoe City from Truckee from 10 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 23 to noon on Monday, Sept. 24. The construction contractor will be handling drainage work and underground utility work.

Traffic may back up along SR 28 into downtown Tahoe City.

Flaggers in the area have been advised to let school buses and public transportation (TART buses) to go through without having to wait upwards of 20 minutes as the rest of the vehicles can expect to be delayed.

Lakeview Drive in Meeks Bay to close for repairs

El Dorado County’s Department of Transportation today announced crews will be
performing road work on Lakeview Drive on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe beginning Thursday, September 20 and continuing through Friday, October 5, 2018.

Lakeview Drive between Silvertip Drive and Saturn Drive, will be closed to
traffic for construction. The closure is necessary to ensure motorist and worker safety while the County’s contractor performs work on Lakeview Drive.

South Lake Tahoe's $5.5M Sierra Boulevard project to start in 2019

Roadwork to close two roads starting Monday: Elks Club and Waverly Drives

El Dorado County’s Department of Transportation today announced crews will be
performing road work on Elks Club Drive and Waverly Drive in Meyers beginning Monday, September 10 and continuing through Friday, September 21, 2018.

The two roads will be closed to traffic for construction. The closures are necessary to ensure motorist and worker safety while the County’s contractor performs work on Elks Club Drive.

Cave Rock barriers come down as construction project nears end

The project to stabilize the roadside slope near Cave Rock has been substantially completed, enough so that most of the lane reduction barriers have been removed. Crews Wednesday were smoothing new asphalt. Motorists should anticipate intermittent roadway shoulder and lane closures over coming weeks for final construction clean up.

November ballot filling up: Nine candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council

Trevor M. Bright has been identified as the victim in Tuesday night's hit-and-run vehicle vs. bicycle crash in South Lake Tahoe.

Cyclist killed by hit-and-run driver along US50 in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 33-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died after being struck by a vehicle on US 50 between Grocery Outlet and the Upper Truckee Bridge as he crossed the highway.

Crews from Security Paving, the Caltrans contractor working in the area, arrived at the job site at 5:38 a.m. Wednesday and found the body off the side of the road and called the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

SLTPD arrived first but turned the incident over to California Highway Patrol (CHP) as it was construction zone incident. Work had not yet begun for the day.

Unsafe tree removed at Heavenly Village, plans unveiled for what's next

Many saw the large tree at Heavenly Village as they drove or walked by, not knowing that it was a hazard and deemed unsafe to be around pedestrians. On Monday, June 4, the tree was cut down by the contractor hired to bring it down, Kenny Curtzwiler and K & K Services, and another local business, Frank's Stump Grinding, took care of the remains and ground level and below.

The 90 foot tree is now firewood, but Dreu Murin of the Heavenly Village management team told South Tahoe Now what is going in its place.

Liberty Utilities upping their response to tree mortality on North Shore

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With an increase in the number of dead and dying trees in the Lake Tahoe region, Liberty Utilities has tripled the number of inspectors they use to identify trees that pose a risk to the utility’s infrastructure. The inspection program and subsequent removal of hazardous trees are designed to reduce the risk of power outages, potential wildfires, and to comply with State regulations.

Joint CA and NV sting operations net 16 people posing as contractors

Sting operations in Zephyr Cove and South Lake Tahoe caught 16 people posing as licensed contractors. The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) teamed with the Nevada State Contractors Board (NSCB) in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, May 16, and the following day in Zephyr Cove, Nevada.

Big changes for Wye in North Lake Tahoe as iconic features removed

There are still trout in the Lake Tahoe Basin, but soon there will no longer the large trout sculpture that for years has greeting people to the town of North Lake Tahoe.

The iconic 21-foot trout sculpture has been sitting in the island intersection between State Route 89 and State Route 28 along with the Williamson Tree and Rotary Club flagpole.

New sod project on Community Playfields completed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews have been working on the Community Play Field this month, repairing damage occurred during last year's SnowGlobe.

New sod was installed this week and the playfield should be ready for young soccer players in a about a month.

Come Up For Air, the annual soccer tournament in South Lake Tahoe, will be held June 16-17. The current plan is to have the youngest players, who aren't as hard on fields as the older kids, to be placed on the new sod.

Caltrans awards $9.5M contract for Highway 50 repaving at El Dorado County line

The main artery between South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento/Bay area will be getting a much needed repaving job with funds from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the gas tax increase that went into effect January 1, 2018.

Caltrans will repave 200 lane miles on U.S. Highway 50 from the El Dorado/Sacramento County line to west of Sunrise Boulevard in Sacramento County from the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

Funds generated because of the bill's passing come from:
A 12-cent-a-gallon increase on gas excise tax
A 20-cent-a-gallon increase in diesel excise tax

Fanny Bridge/SR-89 project in full swing, expect delays in Tahoe City

Work resumed May 1 on the SR 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project in Tahoe City, a project that will bring a new Truckee River Bridge, three roundabouts, and street improvements including lights and sidewalks.

The old Fanny Bridge will be replaced with one that has a new bridge rail that matches the original bridge rail, plus there will now be sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

Lane closures at Cave Rock as work resumes on roadside slope

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There will be single lane closures on Highway 50 near Cave Rock starting Monday, May 7, as Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) completes roadside slope repairs.

Roadwork season returns in South Lake Tahoe

The three-year long, $56.9 million Caltrans project on a two-mile stretch of Highway 50 from the Y to the Trout Creek Bridge is set to resume next week in South Lake Tahoe.

Scope of work in 2018 is from Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue as well as repaving the “Y” intersection. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 30 at 6:00 a.m. from Winnemucca Avenue working east. The work schedule for May will be from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Work resumes on State Route 28 project at Incline Village

Single lane closures on State Route 28 will resume on Monday, April 30 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) starts the third year of their shared use path and water quality project with traffic safety improvements near Sand Harbor.

Roundabout to be installed at deadly Carson Valley intersection

The intersection of State Route 88 at Centerville Lane will receive a compact traffic roundabout, and construction on it begins Monday, April 23.

From April 23 to 27, daytime lane closures from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. will take place with a pilot car leading traffic in alternating directions through the intersection. An approximately 10-day full closure of the SR 88 and Centerville Lane intersection will then begin Monday, April 30 at 10:00 a.m., with nearby detour available via Mottsville Lane and Foothill Road.

Kingsbury Grade construction to last until fall

Roadway drainage pipe improvements on Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) began this week, the second scheduled season of improvements.

Precautionary boil water notice for Topaz Ranch Estates

The Topaz Ranch Estates GID reissued a precautionary “Boil Water” order on April 4, 2018 to those serviced by Topaz Ranch Estates GID water system. This order is due to a loss of pressure from a contractor hitting an additional water line.

Bottled or boiled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation, until further notice. Questions regarding pets and livestock should be directed to your veterinarian.

South Lake Tahoe's Sierra Boulevard study released for public review

The Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project is slated to start construction as soon as the building season in South Lake Tahoe gets underway in 2018. As part of the process, an The Initial Sturdy/Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) is now up for review and public comment. Comments can be made until March 26, 2018.
