Head-on collision in South Lake Tahoe sends six to area hospitals
Submitted by paula on Sat, 02/03/2018 - 6:26pmUpdate 6:45 p.m.: The driver of one of the vehicles, a 29-year-old woman from Stateline, Nevada has been arrested on charges of a Felony DUI and is in the El Dorado County Jail on $125,000 bail.
She was driving a Range Rover eastbound when, for reasons unknown at this time, she traveled into the westbound lane, striking a BMW with five occupants, ages 19-31, all from the Bay Area. The Range Rover was traveling about 40 mph at the time of impact according to the CHP. This is the speed limit at that area of Pioneer Trail.

Student arrested after making threats at El Dorado County middle school
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/02/2018 - 5:15pmA student at Marina Village Middle School in El Dorado Hills was arrested Friday after making threats and threatening the safety of the school.
On February 2, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) was notified of the threats. Upon receiving the information, deputies worked with school staff to ensure the safety of our schools and determine if the threat was credible. The suspect was identified and interviewed. Several witnesses were also identified and interviewed.
VHR meeting postponed after over capacity crowd attends
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/01/2018 - 8:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting held in South Lake Tahoe had to come to an early end Thursday after a City fire official deemed the over 150 people crammed into the airport council chambers too many over the maximum occupancy of 112 to be safe.
Approximately 300 people filled the airport, all wanting a chance to participate in the County's discussion of amending their vacation home rental (VHR) ordinance. Those not in the council chambers filled the airport lobby.

Man arrested after allegedly stealing car in Reno, leading officers to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/31/2018 - 4:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE CALIF. - A 35-year-old California man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning after he allegedly stole a vehicle in Reno, Nevada.
Raheem Ahmed Hanif, from Rodeo, California, was allegedly inside a 2017 Jeep Renegade when the Lithia Jeep dealer in Reno opened for business on January 31. Hanif then drove the car off the lot when the nighttime barriers were removed according to Officer Michael E. Brown of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to 183-years to life for brutal attack
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/30/2018 - 11:17amA former motel maintenance worker at a South Lake Tahoe motel has been sentenced to 183 years to life for the brutal sexual assault of a 22-year-old Macedonian exchange student in 2015.
Manuel Ovidio Ramos-Munoz was found guilty in November, 2017 on seven felony counts, including kidnapping for the purpose of committing a sexual assault, as well as six additional counts and numerous special allegations relating to the subsequent sexual assault of the victim.

The staff was honored for their service doing a job that protects the lives, homes and environment of the South Lake Tahoe community and its visitors.

Transient arrested after man stabbed at South Lake Tahoe bus stop

At 5:33 p.m. Saturday, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call of a stabbing at the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road.
Upon arrival they found Kiefer Chriss, 57, being held down on the ground by some Good Samaritans and a 27-year-old male stabbing victim.

criminal threats, domestic violence, multiple counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and special allegation(s) related to the use of a firearm and inflicting great bodily Injury on a peace officer in the line of duty.
Michael Allen Hoffer, 47, was sentenced twice, once for 45 years and 4 months and the other for consecutive 25 years to life.
County and City vote to extend temporary bans on sales of cannabis
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/24/2018 - 11:30pmOn Tuesday both the South Lake Tahoe City Council and the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors voted to extend their ban on commercial sales of cannabis as they work out the rules and regulations for their jurisdictions.
The ban on sales in South Lake Tahoe was set to expire on January 25, 2018, and without an extension or ordinance in place, anyone could have applied for a license to sell with the State of California.
El Dorado County man dies after going into raw water conduit
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/23/2018 - 5:51pmThe body of a Pollock Pines man was located just after 8:00 a.m. Tuesday after going missing in an El Dorado Irrigation District (EID) untreated raw water conduit on Monday at about 4:00 p.m.
Tory Robert Mayes, a 34-year-old from Pollock Pines, went into the EID’s Camino Conduit pipe that carries raw water from Jenkinson Lake to EID’s water treatment plant 1.5 miles away.
Domestic violence suspect apprehended after hours-long standoff

On Monday, January 22, at about 4:30 p.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received a call that Brandon Bannowski, 25, had violated a Restraining Order and allegedly entered the home of his ex-girlfriend, threatened her with a baseball bat and choked her.

For nearly four decades, the volunteers of this organization have driven patients from South Lake Tahoe to their medical treatment, at no charge to the patients or their families. The drivers take patients to Reno, Carson City, Minden, Truckee, and as far away as UC Davis. The Cancer League also gives limited monetary assistance in the form of small grants to the patients to help with their monthly expenses.

One presentation is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) offices in Stateline, 128 Market St. University of Nevada Cooperative Extension has partnered with the California Radon Program, so free radon test kits will be available at the event for residents of both states.

Small fire at South Lake Tahoe offices under investigation
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/12/2018 - 11:30pmA fire that started in a bathroom at the El Dorado County Mental Health offices in South Lake Tahoe is under investigation.
The small fire was reported at 4:54 p.m. on Thursday, January 11. It started in a toilet at the offices located at 1900 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Employees were evacuated but an employee was able to put the fire out with an extinguisher.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded. According to SLTFR Chief Jeff Meston the crews ventilate the building as there was a lot of smoke in the building.

The question I get asked the most when sharing that I’m a member of PATH (Partners Against the Trafficking of Humans) is: Is human trafficking happening here in South Lake Tahoe? The answer is yes, although solid numbers are hard to come by. Recently, it was reported in local media that 14 people were arrested and one 17 year old girl rescued from a trafficking ring in El Dorado County that included South Lake Tahoe, Placerville, and El Dorado Hills.

El Dorado County is holding a day of public meetings to gather input for broadband planning and improvement on Thursday, January 18 at the Tahoe Mountain Lab in South Lake Tahoe.
The County is working with consulting firm NEO Connect to conduct a Broadband Feasibility Study to evaluate current broadband resources and identify options for improving connectivity and expanding broadband across the County.

Supervisor Sue Novasel said she believes a meeting about the South Shore should be held on the South Shore so more of the citizens could attend and participate.
The hot topic of VHRs has divided many neighbors with opinions on both side of the issue.

Suspected car thief leads police on chase from Carson City to South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/05/2018 - 9:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) attempted to pull over a vehicle in Carson City Thursday night, but the driver refused to stop and led officers on a chase until the car crashed in the El Dorado County portion of the South Shore, over 35 miles away.
NHP followed the car up Spooner Summit on Highway 50 to Stateline. Per protocol they won't engage in high speed chases so followed him until he approached Stateline. Troopers called ahead to South Lake Tahoe, advising police that the vehicle was headed in their direction.
Flu hitting Washoe County hard, numbers on rise in El Dorado County

Suspected illegal butane lab explodes in El Dorado County; 1 adult, 1 minor injured

Initially, El Dorado County Fire responded to the 3:25 p.m. call of an explosion in a home in the 5100 block of Pony Express Trail. They then asked for El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office to respond to the scene for a possible butane extraction lab explosion.
Joshua Jamison, 39, was at the home when the explosion occurred and suffered burns to his face. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Hundreds working behind the scene to keep all safe at SnowGlobe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/30/2017 - 12:27amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Leading up to SnowGlobe, days have been filled with meetings and emergency drills, staffing instructions and planning, all to create a safe atmosphere for the thousands of people in South Lake Tahoe for the three-day music festival.
As the show got underway Friday, December 26, there was a heavy presence of law enforcement and safety personnel, though many of them could not be detected as they moved about the venue in plain clothes. A drone was also in the air, surveying the crowd below.
Santa Rosa man dies while skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort

The unidentified 49-year-old man was on a beginner run near the Poma Trail.
“Heavenly Mountain Resort, Heavenly Ski Patrol, and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” said Mike Goar, vice president of mountain division and chief operating officer of Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe opens on Christmas Eve
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/22/2017 - 3:45pmThere will be two homes for the Warm Room this winter, and the first one opens on Christmas Eve at 7:00 p.m.
From December 24 - December 31, 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) will open the Warm Room at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church located at 2733 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Access to the room will be through the lower parking lot in the back of the church, not through the front door.
"We appreciate the support of the local faith community for rallying behind our common missions of service," said the Coalition.
