Animal shelter empties right before Christmas

If you were planning on adopting a pet in South Lake Tahoe for a Christmas gift, you're out of luck this year as the last adoptable pet at the El Dorado County Animal Services Shelter has been adopted.

Felix, a five-year-old purebred Bengal, was the last pet left at the shelter on Tuesday. By Wednesday, he had found a new home.

Emptying out the shelter is not uncommon at Christmas as many find the perfect gift among the animals being housed there.

The shelter is located at 1120 Shakori Drive off of State Route 89 in Meyers. Their phone number is (530) 573-7925.

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies deliver food to families

Christmas is a little brighter this Christmas for ten South Lake Tahoe area families who received a box full of food from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) and Blue Shield of California.

The El Dorado Hills based insurance company paid for the food for families throughout the county, and the deputies delivered them.

"It felt really good. I was glad we could do something like this, especially this time of year," said Deputy Vince DeLeon who has been with the Sheriff's Office for 17 years and helped do the deliveries.

"Angel of Tahoe" Lisa Maloff celebrates Christmas with local youth

Christmas was made very special for 100 South Lake Tahoe children on Saturday, December 16, 2017 when philanthropist Lisa Maloff joined Tahoe Youth and Family Services (TYFS) in ringing in the holidays with a special celebration that won’t soon be forgotten.

Earlier this month, Mrs. Maloff made a generous donation of $75,000 to the agency that serves the youth and families South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County and Alpine County. Mrs. Maloff asked TYFS to hold a very special Christmas party so she could spread some holiday cheer and create magical memories for our local children.

Stolen painting recovered in Sacramento

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Detectives from South Lake Tahoe Department (SLTPD) posing as potential buyers on Craigslist have uncovered a painting stolen from a gallery in the Heavenly Village.

On Saturday December 9, SLTPD received a report of a stolen painting from Pacific Crest Gallery. The painting, Three Bears Playing Golf, valued at $1195, was taken from the stores front sidewalk display by an unknown suspect.

14 arrested and one rescued during recent trafficking operation

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department joined forces with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and El Dorado County District Attorney's Office in conducting "Victim Centered," to identify human trafficking victims and suspects.

They began the investigation by looking into escort/ dating sites on the internet and those ads coming from El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park and Placerville. The main purpose of the investigation was to identify the human trafficking victims who are being prostituted and to identify the suspects who are pimping and trafficking these victims in El Dorado County.

Bay Area toddler dies after being found in casino hot tub

Updated information 12/17/17 9:00PM:

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has announced that a four-year-old from Redwood City, California has died on the South Shore.

At 1:27 p.m. Sunday, December 17, emergency personnel were called to MontBleu Casino and Resort in Stateline, Nevada after the toddler was found in a hot tub. He was transported by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department to Barton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The next of kin has been notified.

El Dorado County and Lyft team up to keep people safe this holiday season

The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office has teamed up with Lyft, just as other Sacramento and Sierra area community, to keep people on the road safer during the holiday season. Drivers are encouraged to use safe rides to reduce impaired driving and help keep El Dorado County and the surrounding areas safe.

Garbage rates going up in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

Residents in South Lake Tahoe will soon be paying more for garbage pick-up after the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted 4-1 to approve South Tahoe Refuse's request to raise rates for residential customers by 8.81 percent, the biggest one-time increase ever added to the service.

The rate increase will go into effect January 1, 2018.

The monthly rate for SLT customers will go from $26.55 to #28.89 for unlimited service, and increase of $2.34. Qualified seniors (65 and over and part of Liberty Utilities Care program) will pay an extra $1.95, taking their monthly rate to $24.15.

Public's help sought in finding South Lake Tahoe man

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) is asking for the public's help in finding a 38-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe.

Eric Zenter was last seen on November 11, 2017 when he left his uncles's home in Meyers. He was reported missing four days later.

Eric’s vehicle was located at the Lake Tahoe Airport on November 18. EDSO Search and Rescue teams conducted an extensive search of the area, but Eric was not located.

Snowboarder identified in Thursday's accident at a Lake Tahoe resort

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) has identified David Karlin of Orangevale, California as the man who died after a snowboarding accident at Sierra-at-Tahoe Thursday.

The 23-year-old man fell at approximately 1:15 p.m. December 7 as he was snowboarding and slid at a high rate of speed down the Lower Snowshoe run and into a fence near its intersection with the Sugar N' Spice run. Sierra-at-Tahoe ski patrol called for paramedics and air support.

El Dorado County was selected as the "2017 Paving the Way" award by the Greater Sacramento Economic Council (GSEC) einner on December 6. This single award ecognizes a community that has achieved exceptional economic development results during the year.

“For the last 18 months, El Dorado County has developed and executed a strategic approach to economic development in order to elevate the profile of our part of the Greater Sacramento Region,” said Don Ashton, the County’s Chief Administrative Officer.

Large butane extraction lab found in El Dorado County

El Dorado County Sheriff's detectives working on a narcotics investigation December 6 found a large scale, commercial style butane extraction lab at a residence in Camino, California.

Still time to vaccinate against the flu this winter

Flu season is ramping up and the El Dorado County Public Health is reminding people to get vaccinated. Two Washoe County residents in their 80s died this week due to the flu.

“Thanksgiving week was the first week this fall that the numbers of people in the U.S. who saw their healthcare providers for flu-like symptoms were higher than baseline, heralding the onset of the flu season,” said El Dorado County Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams. “Vaccination can prevent the flu.”

Gardnerville man sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual exploitation of a minor

Stephan L. DeGraffenreid will be spending the next 15 years in prison after being sentenced Wednesday by United States District Judge Howard D. McKibben.

DeGraffenreid plead guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor in September. He was sentenced to the minimum number of years for those charges.

Wine Walk at Heavenly Village to raise funds for fire victims

The Heavenly Village will have a Wine Walk on Thursday, November 30 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sample wines crafted and shared by the Carson Road Wineries (El Dorado County), food specials and chances to win great prizes at every location.

The cost is a $20 donation and all proceeds go directly to Santa Rosa area families and first responders who were affected by the recent wildfires.

Parking every night after 5:00 p.m. in the Heavenly Village parking garage is just $5 for the evening. The tent for the event is by the fountain and stop by for your tickets there.

Small child found asleep in car with hypodermic needles and pill bottles

Four people were arrested by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) after a child was found asleep in a car full of hypodermic needles and pill bottles at the Red Hawk Casino in Shingle Springs, Calif.

Security officers from the casino noticed the car in their parking structure with the occupants asleep with a child asleep in the back seat. As they looked closer they could also see many hypodermic needles and pill bottles throughout the vehicle and called the deputies.

Road closures on Hwy 50 and I-80 this week for new sign installations

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting motorists that lane and highway closures on area freeways will be required to replace three overhead changeable message signs with new “Advanced Variable Message Signs” or AVMS. The new signs will be installed in the following locations:
Interstate 80 westbound – Truckee – Donner Pass Road/Hwy 89
Interstate 80 westbound – Davis – Pole Line Road bridge
U.S. Highway 50 eastbound – El Dorado Hills – Latrobe Road

Grinches ruin El Dorado County tree farm's Christmas season

The search is on for a gang of grinches who robbed and ransacked a family-run Christmas tree farm in El Dorado County.

The heartless holiday crime will end a 40-year tradition.

“They clearly busted in the door, they broke off the steal bar, and huge padlock that was on here,” says Gary Schoennauer of the Cedar Ravine Tree Farm in PLacerville, Calif.

New EDC Traction Control Ordinance ready to be enforced

Vehicles without the proper traction control device on their cars while on El Dorado County roads this winter may be fined and/or towed.

Massive traffic jams on Sundays in Meyers throughout last winter led drivers onto side streets without chains or snow tires on their vehicles, creating a parking lot of disabled cars that were stuck in the snow. Those drivers attempting to circumvent traffic ended up using Manda, North Upper Truckee and other local roads but a new ordinance will try and alleviate those issues.

Go Local campaign and contest starts for holidays

The holidays are upon us which means ‘tis the season to GO Local! Tahoe Chamber’s annual GO Local & Win! contest is kicking off on Small Business Saturday, November 25. Simply pick up a GO Local & Win passport at participating businesses or download one online, then shop or dine at any of the participating business through January 1, 2018. For every $25 spent contestants will receive a stamp on their passport. Pair arrested for alleged drug trafficking in Douglas County

South Lake Tahoe and Gardnerville men were arrested in Douglas County on November 19, 2017 on suspicion of drug trafficking and related charges.

Changes on the way for Tahoe Paradise Park; New board member sought

In the works since 2010, the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District is now officially a "recreation and park district." Governor Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 1023 into law that year, creating an expedited procedure for resort improvement districts to convert into community service districts, and in the case of Tahoe Paradise Park, into the recreation and park district.

That "expedited" procedure has taken almost six years for the Tahoe Paradise district to work out.

Navy veteran goes from streets to a home for Thanksgiving

A formerly homeless Navy veteran in El Dorado County now has a place to call home thanks to the kindness of many in the community.

Keith Lozier moved into Eskaton Lincoln Manor in Placerville Monday, the first home he has had in years.

A patrol sergeant with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) first came across Lozier as he was picking up trash in the Cameron Park Safeway parking lot. He told the sergeant that he was cleaning up trash “because it was the right thing to do.”

El Dorado County joins others in state to temporarily ban sales of cannabis

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors have voted for a temporary ban of commercial licenses for both medical and recreational cannabis in El Dorado County with the exception of medical cannabis dispensaries allowed to operate under ordinance 4999.

At the same time, they voted to create a new ad hoc Cannabis Advisory Committee to study and create ballot measures for different cannabis commercial uses tied to
taxation for a local election.

Supervisor Sue Novasel, who represents the South Shore will join Supervisor Ranalli on the new committee.

Letter: VHRs in El Dorado County are out of control

Dear Editor;

In writing this letter, I am only expressing my own opinion and not that of
any organization or entity.

Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in the County are out of control. As is
evidenced by the number of residents complaining about noise, parking, trash,
over-occupancy, etc, it is time for our government representatives to act and
change the current ordinance to respect our rights to live in peaceful

Final step on $68 million public safety center approved for El Dorado County

In the works since 2014, the last hurdle for the new El Dorado County Public Safety Project was approved on Tuesday at the Board of Supervisor's meeting when they unanimously approved a $49 million contract to design and build a new public safety facility. Clark/Sullivan Construction and Broward Builders were awarded the contract to design and build the facility.

Kudos: First Responders team up with Cub Scout Pack 592

Cub Scout Pack 592 of South Lake Tahoe held their fifth annual Police and Fire Night at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall on November 14.

Scouts were able to see first-hand the tools and techniques that first responders use to keep the community safe and how they work together when someone needs help.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 30-year-old resident of South Lake Tahoe has been arrested on charges of Assault with a Firearm after allegedly shooting at the legs of a person after a concert at the Beach Retreat & Lodge early Sunday morning.

Bruce's Legacy, the underwater search and recovery team from Wisconsin, was at Fallen Leaf Lake recently, searching the water for a missing person. What they found was more than expected when bodies of both a man and woman were recovered.

El Dorado County awarded DUI prosecution grant

Those arrested for DUI in El Dorado County, especially repeat offenders and those involved in fatal or injury crashes, can expect to face highly trained, specialized prosecutors, funded by a $195,677.00 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The grant to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office will fund a Vertical Prosecution team that will work cases from arrest through conviction and sentencing.

New program for family and friends of those with mental health conditions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in El Dorado County is among the first of the NAMI Affiliates in the nation to offer "NAMI Family & Friends," a new NAMI four-hour seminar.

"We are delighted to be able to provide an educational experience for those that care deeply about a family member or friend in the community," said Jeanne Nelson, NAMI El Dorado County President. "In just four hours the participants may walk away with some tools and techniques that could directly make a positive difference in the recovery process."
