Vacation rental scams through Craigslist continue in South Lake Tahoe

South Tahoe Now has been warning people for years about renting both short-term and long-term homes through Craigslist, the online classified ad forum.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning potential vacation home renters that scams continue on Craigslist.

South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/09/2017 - 5:53pmAmerican Century Championship continues to impact the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, even months after the annual tournament is over. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local and national non-profits.
On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.
Man found guilty in South Lake Tahoe assault, faces 150 years to life in prison

All people interested in helping Dellinger improve County government and eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, are encouraged to attend and support Dellinger’s election.
Measure C failing even with majority of voters approving of a tax increase
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/07/2017 - 8:54pm10:55 PM Update - With all of the local precincts counted, it appears Measure C has failed. With a final tally of the precinct votes and some mail-ins received by 10:49 p.m., the "yes" votes totaled 54 percent, with the "no" votes getting 46 percent. The measure needed two-thirds to pass.
There may still be some late mail-ins to be counted and the vote has not been certified at this time.
Of the 9,889 registered voters, just 2215 ballots (22.4 percent) have been received tonight.

Meyers Area Plan could be adopted at upcoming meetings
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/07/2017 - 6:09pmMeyers, the commercial, public services, and recreation hub of unincorporated El Dorado County at the South Shore may soon have a new area plan.
The Meyers Area Plan is the comprehensive long-term plan for the Meyers Community and, if approved, will replace the original Meyers Community Plan (MCP) adopted in 1993. The MCP currently serves as the comprehensive land use and zoning plan for the community of Meyers, consistent with the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan and the El Dorado County General Plan. It was originally meant to last a decade, not the almost 25 years its been in place.
Bids being accepted for Lakeview Commons food concession
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 8:21pmThose interested in operating the food and beverage concession services at Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach Recreation Area in South Lake Tahoe may now submit a proposal.
This process was initiated in 2012 when Lakeview Commons first opened. The City of South Lake Tahoe said they would seek bids by concessionaires for the location every few years.
Tax increase to fix South Lake Tahoe roads to be determined Tuesday

Voters will decide if a one-half cent sales tax will be added in the town to provide approximately $2.5 million that will fix potholes and pave, repair, maintain local roads.

Scam targeting users of CalWORKS and CalFresh

Though there are no known victims in El Dorado County, the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) would like to let all users of electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to be on the lookout for potential scammers using text messaging.
"Revenge Porn" gets man one year in prison
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 10:21amA man was found guilty of violating a domestic violence restraining order by a jury in El Dorado County on November 1, 2017.
Daniel Ramirez Rios, 43, violated a domestic violence restraining order and one count of intentionally distributing the images of the intimate body parts of another person – also known as “revenge porn.” Mr. Rios was remanded into custody after the jury’s verdict was announced.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/04/2017 - 6:00amIts election time and the only local issue is Measure C; an increase of one-half percent in local sales tax (excludes groceries and prescriptions) for a term of 15 years to fund road rehabilitation. I voted YES to the measure because there is no long term funding solution within the current budget or the foreseeable future. And, our roads are in terrible shape.
Five cases of viral meningitis in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/03/2017 - 2:58pmSeveral viral meningitis cases have been reported from Susanville and Reno to El Dorado County.
As of November 2, 2017 a total number of four confirmed cases have been identified at Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs and one confirmed case has been identified at El Dorado High School in El Dorado.
The school district has notified parents of the situation and extra cleaning has been done at the schools. Public Health is working closely with school staff and has notified county health care providers.

With over 150 in attendance, we celebrated the success of our collective giving circle! Dr. Guy Lease gave an inspiring keynote speech on "The Power of Education in Our Community", and Karin Holmes was honored as our first annual Woman of Distinction! The positive strength in the room was amazing!

El Dorado County may revamp VHR ordinance
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/02/2017 - 10:28pmAs with meetings concerning vacation rentals (VHRs) in the City of South Lake Tahoe, many residents from the county turned out to voice concerns with the El Dorado County's Tax Collector C.L. Cherie Raffety Wednesday.
What was different than the City's meetings, Raffety limited how the public could speak about noise, parking, occupancy, hot tubs, zoning and other issues they have in their neighborhoods. She broke up the issues and heard concerns, one subject at a time.
Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project closer to summer 2018 construction

Funded by grants, the .6 mile stretch of Sierra Boulevard starting at Highway 50 will have Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and water quality improvements.
Student leaders sought for new NAMI club at STHS

Together, the students will work to end the stigma and made it understood that its okay to seek help, and where and when to find it.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of El Dorado County has spearheaded the new club which is called "STHS NAMI On Campus/Brain Health Leadership Club."

Lake Tahoe Search and Rescue calls on the rise
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 6:37amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the busy summer season is over, those hiking in the mountains around Lake Tahoe needing help getting to safety are on the rise.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) team has been busy this fall, responding to almost double the number of calls.
From September 1 to October 30, 2016, the SAR volunteers responded to 12 incidents. So far in 2017 during the period, they are been called out 22 times.
County to hold VHR meeting in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/29/2017 - 11:05amThe El Dorado County Tax Collector will be holding a meeting to discuss vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the non-city limits portions of South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the SLT library.
C.L. Raffety is holding the public meeting to discuss recent changes in the ordinance, and hear suggestions for amendments. Under consideration for changes include no sub-leases of vacation homes, signage requirements and looking at ways to eliminate clusters of VHRs in neighborhoods.

Couple safe after overnight rescue on Mt. Tallac
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/25/2017 - 11:03pmEl Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, with assistance from a California Highway Patrol Helicopter, made an overnight rescue of a married couple on Mt. Tallac Monday morning.
At 3:00 a.m. October 23, the Sheriff's Office received a call for rescue on the eastern slope of Mt. Tallac.
CodeRed emergency alert available for County residents

This El Dorado County Sheriff's Office - Office of Emergency Services Alert Notification System provides a number of ways in which the county may contact the community in the event of an emergency or urgent law enforcement operations such as evacuations due to wildfires, hazardous material spills, or urgent law enforcement operations.

This enrollment period is one of the few times Medicare beneficiaries can change, enroll into or dis-enroll from, a Part D drug plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan (such as an HMO). Second bird in El Dorado County tests positive for West Nile Virus
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/22/2017 - 8:03pmA bird found on the west slope of El Dorado County has tested positive for West Nile virus, the second for 2017. The bird found near Garden Valley, an Acorn Woodpecker, was tested on September 29 and county health officials just received confirmation this week it had the virus.
To date there have been 463 dead birds to test positive in 38 counties in California. Nearby Sacramento has had 86 birds and Placer County, three birds.

NAMI El Dorado County is hosting an information gathering hour on Thursday, November 2 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Lake Tahoe Community College's Aspen Room.
They would like the public's perspective as El Dorado County Behavioral Health is seeking public input for their FY18/19 Mental Health Services Plan Update.
The county will be providing public meetings, using social media, and promoting in news media to get the word out about the plan, so attendance and input at this meeting will help them plan.

The Animal Coalition of Tahoe and South Lake Brewing Company have teamed up to help raise funds for the non-profit's spay and neuter program and the El Dorado County Animal Shelter in Meyers.
On Wednesday, October 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., South Lake Brewing Company is opening their doors to people and their dogs for an evening of beer, barbeque from Brother's Bar & Grill and a bingo game.
$2 off the first beer for those bringing in their leashed dog (dogs must be leashed during the evening).
Revised medical marijuana rules being worked out, committee sets next meeting

The last meeting of El Dorado County's Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee was a packed house, with a majority of those in attendance made up of cannabis growers in the area, and more of the same is expected at their next meeting.
One of the organizers, County Supervisor Sue Novasel of the South Shore, said all participants were respectful of each other's opinions. "It was a good meeting," said Novasel. She said many were concerned about a proposed registration procedure.
VHRs on agenda for El Dorado County BOS meeting in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/16/2017 - 7:44pmEvery year the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors venture to South Lake Tahoe to hold one of their meetings in the eastern portion of the county. This year's meeting will be Tuesday, October 17 at the Lahontan Water Board Annex at 971 Silver Dollar Avenue.
They usually hold their meeting when the South Lake Tahoe City Council does not have a meeting, but with the Council voting to change their October meeting dates recently, that is not true this year. It was too late for El Dorado County to change the date and they had to find a new venue.
Threats at El Dorado County high school being investigated

The individual is a resident of Texas and was contacted by local law enforcement in that state. The individual, identified as nineteen year old Justin Boaz of Tyler, Texas, admitted to making the post because he was “bored”.

El Dorado County fugitive found on East African island
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/12/2017 - 1:06pmFor nearly five years the El Dorado County District Attorney's office has been searching for Javed Noori, a man who had been placed on the federal government's Northern California Most Wanted List.
That search is now over after Noori was returned to the county on October 9, 2017 where he faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon including two special allegations for inflicting great bodily injury and for a prior strike for very similar conduct.
South Lake Tahoe man charged with burglarizing pizza restaurant
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/12/2017 - 11:50amA South Lake Tahoe man has been arrested on charges he allegedly burglarized the Lake Tahoe Pizza Company on October 9, 2017.
At 10:00 a.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to an alarm at the popular restaurant located at 1168 Emerald Bay Road. Upon arrival they learned someone had gained entry through a window and left through a door, and that cash was missing.
Video surveillance showed them a suspect.
Suspects sought for attempted robberies in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/11/2017 - 10:30pmTwo suspects are being sought by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) for three attempted robberies in Cameron Park and Placerville October 9-10.
The first attempt occurred on October 9 at the CVS store on Palmer Drive in Cameron Park. At about 7:00 p.m., two male suspects entered the store and attempted to rob the pharmacy. They jumped the pharmacy counter and demanded narcotics. When they were not given the medication, the two suspects fled the store.
Air quality in El Dorado County affected by Northern California fires
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/11/2017 - 5:05pmAir quality in El Dorado County is currently being impacted by smoke from wildfires burning in the State. County health officials are reminding residents to take precautions should wildfire smoke impact the areas in which they live, work and recreate. According to Air Pollution Control Officer Dave Johnston, wildfires can produce smoke that causes health problems, particularly for children, older people and those with heart disease or respiratory issues.
Johnston advises residents to limit outdoor activity if they see or smell smoke.
