SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - To our South Lake Tahoe Library Friends and Community, Thank you for your patience as the Friends of the Library have been working with Library staff and the El Dorado County Public Health Services to continue our book sale events at the Library. Unfortunately, due to weather and grounds concerns and also increasing Covid-19 virus cases in the area, we are canceling our Saturday, November 21 sale and suspending book sale events until the weather warms or we can go back inside. As conditions change, we will let you know and welcome your participation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Library is continuing their summer events even though they cannot present them in person. On Friday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m., join he Fratello Marionettes on the library's Facebook page to see the performance of the classic fairy tale, The Frog Prince.

Outdoor performances have always been part of the Summer Reading Challenge but due to current circumstances, all performances have been moved online.

This Event Has Been Canceled The Adventures of Mark Twain, Tahoe and the Territorial Enterprise Newspaper in Virginia City. Join the Friends of the Library for an illustrated talk by Steve Robison, printer at Tahoe Letterpress. Mr. Robison will explain how Mark Twain wound up in Virginia City, and on occasion in the Lake Tahoe basin. He will also share his discovery of a vast collection of antique 1860's type from the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City where Mark Twain was a reporter and city editor during the early silver discoveries of the Comstock Lode.

South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library will be presenting "An Anthology of Authors" on Saturday, December 14, 2019, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the library.

Stop by to meeting these authors: Gantt Miller, Lyla Dusing, Carol Haase, Karin Holmes, Jennifer Quashnick, Sondra Garner, Pat Crane, Jayme Willison, Mark Klitsie and Lynne Goldsmith.

Books will be available for purchase and signing and there will be raffle prizes.

Join the Friends of the Library, in partnership with the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), as we ogle the amazing photographs (Bob discovered over 700 unique species) taken by Bob Sweatt last year for the Tahoe Wildflower Big Year (TWBY) which celebrates the hundreds of plant species that make the Tahoe region their home. This inspiring presentation will prepare you for all that Spring has to offer. Free and open to all.

Children are invited to create your own space rocket and launch it into the trees and beyond! Join the South Lake Tahoe Library at their Stomp Rockets activity on Friday, July 26 at 2:00 p.m. and become the next rocket scientist.

This is part of the Summer Reading Challenge at the library which is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

The South Lake Tahoe Library is hosting another outdoor show on Friday, July 12 when "Kenn Adams' Adventure Theater!" comes to town.

Kenn Adams, Adventure Theater! is a fast-paced, interactive, outrageously funny, theatrical experience for heroes of all ages. Kenn will be performing this show “Adventure in Space” where the King is mad, the planet is doomed, and, the world needs a hero…like you!

The show starts at 2:00 p.m. on the lawn outside the library which is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

The South Lake Tahoe Library is hosting another free outdoor show on Friday, June 28 when they welcome Tony Borders Magical Ventriloquist 2:00 p.m.

Tony Borders will be performing his show "It’s Showtime on Puppet Planet" which includes a mind-reading alien, tricks by Astro the Wonder Dog, and magic that is out of this world.

The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. The show is made possible by the Friends of the Library.

“The Dirt Around Lake Tahoe: Must-Do Scenic Hikes” takes readers on a journey to dozens of trails throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin and beyond. Alpine lakes, wilderness peaks and waterfalls are the rewards.

Author Kae Reed, who originally published these articles in Lake Tahoe News, will be a guest of the South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library on July 30. She will be reading from the book, signing copies and answering questions starting at 6pm at the library on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

Find out how the League to Save Lake Tahoe has advocated for lake-wide protection since its inception in 1957. Learn how innovative new programs are currently helping ensure that Lake Tahoe remains resilient in the face of threats like climate change and traffic. Marilee Movius, the League’s Community Engagement Manager, will be speaking directly about the effectiveness of direct actions like volunteer cleanups and restoration days, and highlighting actions everyone can take to help protect our beloved Lake. Join Friends of the Library as author Neal Cobb, a Reno native of a certain age who grew up during the zenith of its day, tells the incredible history of this incredible town at the April 13 Reno Now and Then II Book Talk. Through historic photos and contemporary re-photography of selected locations, the author illustrates the tension between growth and stability that characterizes Reno. This presentation will evoke fond memories in old-timers while newcomers will find a better understanding of the town just down the hill.

Join the Friends of the Library as author, lawyer and animal advocate Dave Simon shares his book, the first to fully explore and expose the rigged economics of the American meat and dairy industries, and what this peculiar system means for our health, the environment, and billions of farm animals. Written in a clear and accessible style, MEATONOMIC$ provides vital insight into how the economics of animal food production influence spending, eating, health, and longevity. This should be an eye opening presentation followed by open discussion. Book sale and signing to follow.

Join the Friends of the Library as we host a very informative Bird Talk. Sarah Hockensmith of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will share with us all the birds that were discovered during the 2018 Tahoe Big Year. This year-long birding event celebrated the hundreds of bird species that occupy the Tahoe Region, and brought together birding beginners and enthusiasts alike. This presentation will show you what was found including common and unique birds of Lake Tahoe. Come learn how exciting (and addicting) birding can be. Free and open to all.

Sierra Strings of Tahoe will provide us with an afternoon of music, ushering in winter and the holiday season on December 1 at 1:00 p.m. This locally celebrated group will enchant you with a variety of songs.

Join both the Friends of the Library and AAUW-South Lake Tahoe for a presentation by Amanda Horn of the Nevada Museum of Art on "Anne Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Art". This major retrospective exhibition, at the Museum through January 27, 2019, rediscovers and celebrates the work of Anne Brigman (1869-1950) who is best known for her iconic landscape photographs made in the early 1900s depicting herself and other female nudes outdoors in the Sierra Nevada. Please note this meeting will take place in the Aspen Room of LTCC as the Library is closed for the Veterans Day weekend.

The South Lake Tahoe Library just wrapped up another great Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children, teens and adults to read all summer long. Patrons at our library logged a total of 5,236 books and earned a total of 817 prizes! We would like to thank the businesses and organizations that donated prizes and funds to our program.

Prizes that children could choose from included gift certificates from Applebee’s Restaurant, Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza, Heavenly Village Cinema, McDonalds, and Modern Makers. Thank you to all of these businesses for their generous donations!

Join the Friends of the Library as editor Riva Enteen introduces the just-released book, Follow the Money: Radio Voices for Peace and Justice. Follow the Money has been described as an "encyclopedia of resistance," a "book of hope," which illustrates how "the nation is bursting with movements." The book inspires action by ending with Marge Piercy’s poem “To be of use.”

Magician Brian Scott will perform his special blend of magic, comedy and pure fun.

Swimmer Erline Christopherson returns! Join the Friends of the Library and Lake Tahoe Historical Society as they welcome back the first woman ever to complete a length-wise swim of Lake Tahoe (and she was only 16). She will share her memories of that record-setting day in 1962 with historic videos, photos and tales.

If you missed her 2014 presentation, this is an amazing story to hear and an awesome opportunity for our community.

Join the Friends of the Library as author M.C. Behm presents his debut novel, "The Elixir of Yosemite". This story takes readers up and down the vertical world of Yosemite National Park as a misfit Park Ranger and South Lake Tahoe teenager try to stop a mercenary from unleashing havoc on America's first protected land. Mr. Behm is a former deep-rural and inner-city schoolteacher, who writes the Tahoe Dad column for the Reno Gazette Journal and Tahoe Mountain News. Join us for an evening of intrigue.
