Free Student Sports Physicals

Tahoe Center for Orthopedics, Barton Health and Lake Tahoe Unified School District have joined together to offer FREE student sports physicals to South Tahoe and Whittell High School and Pop Warner athletes playing fall, winter and spring sports. The event will take place on Wednesday, June 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. at South Tahoe High School, 1735 Lake Tahoe Blvd. This one-time, annual-event is available on a walk-in basis. Tahoe Yellow Cress planted in partnership with high school, private business and conservation groups

A group of South Tahoe High School students joined Edgewood employees, conservation experts and officials on May 19 to plant new nursery grown stems of the threatened plant, Tahoe yellow cress on the beach at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Edgewood Companies is participating in a volunteer program called the Tahoe Yellow Cress Stewardship Program and has been assisting with inventory surveys as far back as 1979.

Services for legendary radio commentator Travus T. Hipp will be held this Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Hipp died early Friday morning, May 18, at his Silver City home. He was 75, as old as the Golden Gate Bridge in his beloved San Francisco.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Gathering, gnoshing and remembering will begin at the Silver City Community Center, 385 High Street, at 10:00 a.m. Food and refreshments will be provided. Those who wish may bring more.

Dr. Scott Welker, from Barton Memorial Hospital at South Lake Tahoe performed his first single-incision cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gallbladder) with the da Vinci Si Surgical System on Wednesday, May 9.

“With all of the added benefits of less pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and a reduced risk of infections, the single-incision allows us to do cholecystectomies via one incision in the umbilicus (navel), which is nearly invisible after it heals,” Dr. Welker said.

Kirk will present a talk on these avian visitors to the area on Thursday, June 14, 2012 (no-host bar at 5:30pm, presentation begins 6 pm, $5 donation suggested) at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences on the Sierra Nevada College campus and a bird watching walk on June 16 starting at the UC Davis Tahoe City Field Station.

'Stars of Tomorrow' Talent Competition Applications Due April 20

The 6th annual STARS of Tomorrow Talent Competition has been scheduled for Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the South Tahoe Middle School MPR. Applications are due April 20.
The competition is open to students currently enrolled in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades in the South Tahoe area, both California and Nevada sides of the state line. This includes South Tahoe High, Whittell High and any student enrolled in a private high school program or an approved continuation or home-schooled program.

Final performance of 'The Royal Family' tonight at South Tahoe High

The final performance of the play, The Royal Family, will be performed at 7 p.m. tonight at South Tahoe High School beginning at 7:00 p.m. due to weather cancellation of the show on Saturday night.
