Coast Guard continuing investigation into Tahoe Queen fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/17/2016 - 11:40amAn investigation team from the Coast Guard is continuing their investigation into Tuesday's fire on board the Tahoe Queen, which suffered severe damage while it was docked at the pier at the Zephyr Cove Marina on Lake Tahoe's South Shore.
At this point they have not completed their investigation and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/16/2016 - 8:12amZEPHYR COVE, NV - Investigators and vessel inspectors from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco are on the scene of Tuesday's fire on board the 119-foot passenger Lake Tahoe paddle wheel boat, the Tahoe Queen.
"Most of the damage is limited to the boat's pilot house and second deck," Lt. Jake Aulner of the U.S. Coast Guard told South Tahoe Now. "This can be attributed to the great response by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department."
Aulner and the team from USCG Yerba Buena Island will be at the scene until the cause of the morning blaze is determined.
First VHR in South Lake Tahoe denied a permit under new regulations
Submitted by admin on Fri, 08/12/2016 - 3:07pmA home being built on Overlook Court near Heavenly Mountain Resort is the first one to be denied a Vacation Home Rental permit under the Planning Commission's interpretation of the new VHR guidelines created by the City of South Lake Tahoe.
During their monthly meeting at the airport on Thursday, the commission voted 2-2 to uphold the denial of the permit made by the zoning administrator, John Hitchcock. The fifth member of the commission, Shannon Eckmeyer, was not at the meeting due to another engagement.

Decorated U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran and international speaker David Courson will be at the First Baptist Church of South Lake Tahoe at 11:00 a.m. this Sunday, August 14.
Courson is Director of the Island Bible Institute in Hawaii, and has directed Christian educational and assistance projects in war-zones, refugee camps, and developing nations since 1974 in over 60 countries. Current speaking topics emphasize the struggle for religious freedom all over the world.

A Hidden Gem in Tahoe

Tallac is located next to Camp Richardson and Fallen Leaf Lake Campground – an area most folks are familiar with – and yet locals constantly wander onto the site from the beach and announce they had no idea this place was here.

Carson City's Ormsby House owners seeking buyer

Don Lehr and Al Fiegehen bought the hotel-casino in 2001, and embarked on what to many was an endless remodeling project that proceeded in fits and spurts for the last 15 years.
On Thursday, Lehr said they are now looking for a buyer for the property, after refusing multiple offers over the years.
"We don't want to run a casino," Lehr said. "Whoever wants to operate it will have to figure out how they are going to finish it."

Kennedy, who on the ownership team of Base Camp Pizza, California Burger, Azul Latin Kitchen and now, the Lakeside Beach House, shows gratitude on a weekly basis. Those in uniform and teachers get a free meal at any of his four restaurants (police officers, sheriff's deputies, fire personnel, nurses and those on active duty).
"This is to thank them, and show that we appreciate their service," said Kennedy. "They are our local heroes."
124 local kids now part of TYFS Girl's Project

Tahoe Youth & Family Services started “The Girl’s Project” in 2010 to partner with girls and help them become more confident and influential women later in life. The Girl’s Project has now expanded to Tahoe Valley Elementary, Sierra House Elementary, Bijou Elementary and South Tahoe Middle School.

Submitted by admin on Tue, 07/05/2016 - 7:38pmThree bear cubs arrived in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday, after their mother was killed in a car accident in Yosemite on July 4.
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care Co-Founder Tom Milham drove to Lee Vining this morning, to meet people from Yosemite and transferred the cubs to his car.
As is the norm with LTWC, bears are named by the region they come from, so these cubs, about four-five months old, are named Yosemite 1, Yosemite 2 and Yosemite 3.

Memories of Bob were shared by his family and friends in front of the Osgood Toll House (OTH), the oldest standing commercial building at Lake Tahoe. It was Bob's desire to be remembered through Lake Tahoe's history. Over $4,000 in donations were received in his memory for the restoration of the OTH. Plans for the next phase were unveiled.

As I walked through the front gate of the Revive Coffee & Wine, I instantly felt at home as the decor both inside and out matched my pinterest boards and crafty endeavors and the smiling and friendly staff was more than welcoming.
Revive Coffee & Wine is a new South Lake Tahoe business inside the old Pichetti Winery at 3135 Harrison Avenue, sharing the space with South Tahoe Standup Paddle.
The story behind the name "revive" is a special one.

Large 4th of July parade expected in South Lake Tahoe

Community members, clubs, groups are all signing up to take part in the parade on Monday, July 4, starting at 10:00 a.m. So far, there are 50 entries and 150 walkers participating.
The route goes from the Crossing at the "Y" to Al Tahoe Blvd, at the Rite-Aid parking lot so travelers can expect travel delays on the road during the duration of the parade.

Opinion: Invasive clams should not be forgotten

Not only are the termites annoying, but they’re hard to get rid of and are slowly but surely destroying your home. Similarly, Asian clams and their expanding population are ruining a place that is home to many. Asian clams were not reacted to fast enough, resulting in some serious issues for Lake Tahoe, and old plans to eradicate them have not proven fully effective, so, new plans must be thought of and considered seriously to save the clarity of the lake and the economy of Tahoe.
Letter: Caltrans proposes roundabout at 50/89 intersection in Meyers

The department has looked at several options at this location and has identified a roundabout as the preferred alternative to address safety concerns and improve traffic flow.
El Dorado County man arrested on exploitation and assault charges
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/02/2016 - 1:19pmDeputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in Diamond Springs on Tuesday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m.
Upon arrival, they discovered that Luis Javier Calderon, 33, had taken a knife from the home's kitchen and went into a bedroom where a 14-year-old female relative was sleeping. Calderon held the knife to her neck and made her stand and remove all of her clothing, according to a EDSO press release.

Group formed to battle new Vacation Home Rental Ordinance change

CHP hold bike rodeos for local school kids

All students who participated had to go through a maze of stop signs and cones, all while following the rules for bicyclists, including wearing a helmet.

Volunteers are the heart of the Historic Site and help make exploring this site a wonderful experience for visitors throughout the season. Local volunteers are needed as museum docents and guides with interpretive programs and tours.

South Lake Tahoe teen named Youth of the Year
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/11/2016 - 4:16pmMya Rossi has been named Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls club of Lake Tahoe because of her outstanding contributions to both the club and her community.
Along with this role she will also be receiving a Heavenly/Kirkwood/Northstar season pass next winter courtesy of the Vail Epic Promise Program.
