Lake Tahoe Skiers Nominated for U.S. Olympic Alpine Team

The team is highlighted by Olympic gold medalists Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and World Champion Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO).

U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association announced the nomination of 13 halfpipe and slopestyle snowboarding athletes Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix. Slopestyle snowboarding will be contested in the Olympic Winter Games for the first time ever in Sochi. The five event qualifying series came down to the final stop at Mammoth Mountain, with all but two spots decided during the final event weekend.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/18/2014 - 6:41pmTwo days after clinching a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team, South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson took the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix overall slopestyle title and a $10,000 cash prize with her win Saturday at Mammoth Mountain.
Anderson is looking forward to representing her country in Sochi, "It’s not just the local Tahoe community; it’s the entire U.S. and even my friends throughout that world that are supporting me. It’s really special to come together for the Olympics because of how much love you get from your country and representing your nation. It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before."
Forest Service to Hold Webinar on Land Management Plan

A webinar to explain the final Land Management Plan that will guide the management of National Forest System lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin over the next 15 years will be held by the U.S. Forest Service on Tuesday, January 14 at 2 pm.
The hour long webinar will explain the plan, highlight changes from the draft, and outline the remainder of the plan revision process and include a brief presentation, followed by a question and answer period. The webinar will be archived on the LTBMU website for later viewing.
Lake Tahoe Community College Offers a Learn Spanish Abroad Program

The program is open to anyone who is at least 18 years of age, and participants do not have to be current LTCC students. All levels of Spanish language learners are welcome to experience the program.
El Dorado County Sheriffs Trying to Reunite Recovered Property With Owners

As previously released, four suspects were arrested related to burglaries. One of those suspects was Gary Joseph Masse who was paroled in July 2013 after serving prison time for a previous burglary conviction.

We stopped by Meeks to check out their Kids Day and found our friends from Kiwanis with their free Kids ID booth, Jen from KTHO broadcasting live and Ethan and Eli Cox enjoying the crafts while dad James was grabbing their hot dogs.
We also stopped by the newly remodeled Starbucks at the Y and checked out the beautiful new place. So much more space now! Same friendly crew ready to serve.

Submitted by Editor on Fri, 07/19/2013 - 12:34amUPDATE: This afternoon (Friday, July 19, 2013) the South Lake Tahoe Police Department received word from the Mt. Pleasant Police Department in South Carolina that their investigation has confirmed Autumn Ellison has returned to South Carolina.
She has not yet been recovered. Nevertheless, South Carolina officials are confident she is no longer in our area. Investigators from South Carolina expressed their appreciation to our local media and public for their attention to this matter.

May 27, 2013 - 11:00am The Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson Area Chapter 388 invite you attend a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27th, 2013 beginning at 11 AM at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada.
The service will be an hour long. Immediately following the service, there will be an unveiling of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The shrine lists the names of 151 young men from the State of Nevada who gave their lives in Vietnam. Adjacent to that are the names of eight nurses who also gave their lives in Vietnam while they were there caring for our troops.

Eric S. Holton of Gardnerville ID'd in North Lake Tahoe truck ramp accident
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 04/24/2012 - 12:44pmThe deceased driver of the commercial truck that crashed through the runaway ramp at Mount Rose Highway near Incline Village on Monday has been identified as Eric S. Holton, 31 of Gardnerville.
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched at 2:48 p.m. to the accident on State Route 431, approximately one-half mile east of State Route 28, near Incline Village. The vehicle involved was a 2006 gray Freightliner truck tractor pulling a 1989 flat bed trailer transporting composite decking materials traveling westbound on the two-lane highway.
Fitch Affirms South Tahoe Public Utility District with AA+; Rating Outlook Stable

The firm, which positions itself as a global rating agency dedicated to providing value beyond the rating through independent and prospective credit opinions, research and data, gave the water and sewer district a AA+ rating, noting $10.8 million sewer revenue certificates of participation. The ratings agency also asserts that STPUD continues to have strong reserves in place that protects the district against a reduction in its property tax revenues.
Arrests made in Lake Tahoe cocaine sting
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 03/08/2012 - 4:13pmThe Tri-NET Narcotic Task Force, working in conjunction with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Street Enforcement Team (SET), the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Investigators, and the Santa Cruz California Police Department arrested 26 year-old Joseph Perez and 25 year-old Oscar Madriz, both of Santa Cruz, California, on charges of trafficking and sales of cocaine. The arrests were made on March 2.

Air service between Reno and San Jose to begin in June

Update 2:00 p.m.: Here is what we know at this point:
Four people are dead, including the gunman who shot himself and died later at the hospital. Two of the dead where a man and women in the National Guard, who were in uniform.
There is a press conference scheduled for 3 p.m.
A few minutes before 9 a.m., a lone gunman armed with automatic AK-47-type assault rifle drives up to the IHOP on South Carson Street, and begins shooting in the parking lot. Locals BBQ owner Ralph Swagler said he saw the man drive up, and then empty a clip of ammo outside the IHOP, then reloads and goes inside, where he fires more shots very rapidly and exits within a few seconds.
Swagler said the gunman then saw his son locking the door of their business and opened fire at them. He also allegedly fired shots at the H&R Block office next door. Sometime after, the gunman shot himself, and died later at the hospital.
