Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/15/2019 - 9:41pmWe participated in the recent climate strike and were moved and inspired by the large crew of South Tahoe High students that hiked the four miles from the High School to Lake View Commons with a clear and unified demand for climate action. It is also encouraging to live in a City that has resolved to transition the City’s entire electrical grid to clean energy by 2032, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent below baseline by 2040.
Achievable housing project planned for North Lake Tahoe

They are working with housing developer partner Related-Pacific Companies to develop conceptual options for a potential mixed-use commercial and achievable housing project on the site.
While the purchase represents a step forward in bringing more achievable housing to North Lake Tahoe, development concepts for the site are still in early stages and no project proposal has yet been brought forward for formal consideration or approval.

I had been wanting to see this film since it first started shooting knowing the cast involved but Joaquin's performance surpassed even my expectations.

We love these public lands not just because of their natural beauty, but because they are central to our way of life. Many of us live here, or moved here, because of what they provide - culture, lifestyle, and livelihood.
200 people, young to old, joined Global Climate Strike in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/20/2019 - 10:39pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the Global Climate Strike was taking place around the world will millions of people participating, approximately 200 people in South Lake Tahoe held their own on the shores of Lake Tahoe at Lakeview Commons.
Several speakers addressed the crowd, one bigger than organizers imagined.
"This is a fantastic turnout," said organizer Stephen Wright of South Lake Tahoe. "Kids even left school."
Wright was referring to a group of students who walked from South Tahoe High to Lakeview Commons (a 4-mile trek) to join in.

Redefining Organics gets go ahead for cannabis business from Planning Commission
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/13/2019 - 5:11pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first cannabis business to be created after the passage of an ordinance approved by the South Lake Tahoe City Council passed a big hurdle Thursday. The South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission voted 5-0 to approved the cannabis use permit application for Redefining Organics, LLC and recommended to the City Council they approve the required development agreement.
They also recommended to Council they have both a first and second reading of the development agreement at their October 1 City Council Meeting.
Five Guys Burgers & Fries opens, Chipotle on the way to South Lake Tahoe

The restaurant, which now officially serves beer and wine, opened Monday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m.
This is the 57th Five Guys location to be owned and managed by Encore Restaurants, LLC, all of which are located throughout the states of California, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Massachusetts.
El Dorado County Employment Resource Center reopens in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/04/2019 - 7:57pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After closing in May 2019 for much-needed repairs, the El Dorado County Employment Resource Center n South Lake Tahoe has reopened to the public.
Repairs completed include carpet replacement, minor mold remediation and painting.
The Employment Resource Center provides free job assistance services to El Dorado County residents who are looking for jobs or want to improve their job readiness skills. There is no income requirement to use the Center.
The Employment Resource Center provides the following services for members of the public at no charge:
New housing opportunities for homeless transitional aged youth in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/03/2019 - 10:41amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) has announced a groundbreaking new Transitional Living, Rapid Re-housing, and Homeless Prevention Program for transitional aged youth (18-24 years old) that are currently homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless in South Lake Tahoe. This homeless prevention program is a one-time block grant funded by the Homeless Emergency Aid Program (HEAP) and will be available to our community over the next two years.

Douglas County School District Superintendent Teri White has supplied a list of facts to give kids and parents an update on their schools.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/20/2019 - 6:46amTonight we had eight cars in the VHR across the street. The house is rated for four cars with a maximum of ten people. We reported it this time. We usually do not report violations because it makes us anxious… no one wants to be the “BAD” guy. The call was simple enough and the response was surprisingly quick. Roughly 20 minutes after our call the officer arrived to view the cars parked in the driveway, in the street, in the front yard and along the side of the house.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A special meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m.to discuss approval of funds needed to get Sierra House Elementary opened by the beginning of the school year.
Since a Labor Day 2018 fire, the school which housed grades K-5 has been closed with students split between South Tahoe Middle School and Al Tahoe Elementary.
There have been concerns in the community the school wouldn't be ready to open in August.
Stateline redevelopment area remains intact after Douglas County Commissioners' decision

There was an overflow crowd at the commissioner's June 20 meeting at Lake Tahoe. Many of those who could not fit in the meeting room were accommodated with audio feed in the judges' chambers and the bottom floor of the parking garage.

Gainer started the company over 40 years ago, specializing in boat docks in the Tahoe Keys. Now Hart has hit the waterways with the new Boat Docks Barge, something he designed, engineered and built with the help and support of Dan Benson.

Western Nevada College starts pilot program for CTE students

The pilot program, NV-ACE, provides people with the opportunity to develop the skills required in the in-demand jobs in the area.
El Dorado County employment office in South Lake Tahoe closes for a few weeks
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/10/2019 - 10:08pmThe El Dorado County Employment Resource Center located in South Lake Tahoe will be closed for several weeks for needed building repairs which include mold remediation, painting and new carpeting. Originally the office, located in Suite 100 of the El Dorado Center at 3368 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, was going to be temporarily closed for just this week.
Other offices in the same building, including County Income Support and Child Welfare Services, will remain open and provide services to the public.

On Campus
This week, students went online to select their schedule for next year.
Black Light Dance is in the student union 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. tonight. Before the dance, the Black Light Rally is being held in the school’s gym at noon.
Harrah’s Casino hosted a job fair Tuesday for students interested in summer jobs.

This plan was concocted by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) with little input from the community and the near absence of participation by our former City Leaders.
Lime Scooters but not Lime Bikes return to South Lake Tahoe this summer

Jodi Dayberry, President of the South Tahoe Educators Association, led the teachers in their presentation to the LTUSD Board of Trustees, telling the five elected members teachers are struggling due to the high cost of living and many have second jobs and summer jobs to fill their financial void.
Tahoe Homeless Coalition receives grant for year-round mental health services

In December, the Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust made more than $2M in contributions to support emotional wellness programs in nearly every mountain resort community in which Vail Resorts operates, including South Lake Tahoe.
Costco exploring new location in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/16/2019 - 2:00pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Costco is in the preliminary stages of considering building a warehouse in El Dorado Hills on the east side of Silva Valley Parkway, almost 80 miles to the west of Lake Tahoe on US50.
According to a County spokesperson, Costco has an internal selection and approval process which includes the company president doing a site visit. Costco representatives said they hope to have a final decision in April.

Before they get here, hundreds of workers are spending many hours preparing the scene from the delivery and installation of stages, tents, electrical cables, ski jumps, trailers, vehicles and port-a-potties.
Tahoe Warm Room finds new location - opens December 12
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/07/2018 - 10:01pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless has announced the opening of their Warm Room for the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, December 12. This year they will be located inside the old Emerald Bay Dentistry office at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.
The Warm Room will operate nightly from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. through April 2019.
For the fourth year, the Warm Room will provide overnight refuge from the elements in a safe and warm environment for approximately twenty-five adult men and women who are experiencing homelessness during winter months.
US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project approved by TRPA

On Thursday, November 15, 2018, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Board of Directors unanimously approved the final joint environmental document for the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the "Loop Road."
Last week, the board of the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) unanimously approved the same document, the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS/EIS).
Drake Niven ~ 8/2/49 - 11/7/18
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/15/2018 - 10:52amDrake Niven, a long-time Lake Tahoe contractor, died on November 7 of a heart attack suffered during surgery at Carson-Tahoe Medical Center. He was 69.
He was well known in the local building community and built custom homes all around the lake. Drake was also instrumental in helping friends and neighbors re-build their homes after the Angora Fire. He just recently retired from building due to health issues.
Former City Manager Nancy Kerry honored with proclamation and party
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/14/2018 - 11:26amNancy Kerry has been gone from her position as the city manager of South Lake Tahoe since March, but she finally got the credit due for her many accomplishments and contributions during a standing room only celebration Tuesday evening.
Over 75 community leaders came together to present Nancy with a proclamation signed by both Mayor Wendy David and Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis, their last official act with the City.
The list of tributes spoken during the evening is a lengthy one.

One year ago I wrote an editorial "Use the election to create a community of collaboration and teamwork," and today I urge continuance of community, collaboration and teamwork.

I know how hard we work to get them to come here to spend their hard-earned money in our economy. Tourists have many options. VHRs, hotels, camping, North Lake, Utah, Colorado. They want the experience they want and VHRs are part of that experience. With limited options, they will go elsewhere.

All first-time college students, including those who earned college units while still in high school, can get their tuition waived. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in and complete 12 or more units each quarter for three academic quarters, and meet one of the following requirements:

The 49-year-old Rush gave his notice to the Emerald Isle, NC town commissioners, resigning the position he'd held for 17 years in the small oceanside resort community.

Joe Cardinale and Jim Bagan ran into each other at a Mazda convention (both have dealerships with that brand as well as Toyota) a few years ago. Whenever they met up after that Bagan would ask Cardinale when he wanted to sell his South Lake Tahoe location according to General Manager Gary Hamner. Each time Cardinale would say "no" until a few months ago.

Over 150,000 rides made on Lime bikes and scooters in South Lake Tahoe

Since they launches in May there have been over 100,000 scooter rides and over 50,000 bike rides on the popular lime green rentals. Lime started with bikes on May 21 and Scooters on June 6.
Winter job fair Tahoe Works to be held October 18
