The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee: A Musical Comedy comes to Valhalla Tahoe

How do you spell F-U-N? Six awkward tweens vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime in this fast-paced, Tony Award-winning musical comedy that is coming to the stage of the Valhalla Boathouse Theater at Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe for three weekends in July.

Plug pulled on Lake Tahoe Labor Day fireworks show
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/30/2017 - 2:07pmIn an effort to encourage visitors to the South Shore to stay over on Sunday night during the Labor Day weekend, the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) started a fireworks show in Lake Tahoe in 1998.
With a changing school year calendar and lack of Sunday night stays, the Labor Day fireworks show is no more.
"The lodging and tourism board (LTVA and Tahoe Douglas Visitor's Authority, TDVA) have had discussions for awhile about the Labor Day fireworks," said LTVA and TDVA Executive Director Carol Chaplin. "Lodging was finding their Sunday night reservations were soft."
Food Truck Weekend in South Lake Tahoe cancelled

The 3-day event On Course Events had been planning was set to include 8 food trucks and a late night performance from Afrolicious at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe.
With limited event support coupled with overwhelming costs associated with providing the appropriate infrastructure for the 8 trucks and expected guests all weekend, On Course Event decided this event became too expensive to produce at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre festival schedule this summer is a full one and they've added a new event this summer, Evening Music on the Lawn.
The grand lawn at Valhalla has been a popular spot for Sunday afternoon concerts and now there will be two evening lawn concerts in 2017. Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic supper and enjoy some music, there will be a beer and wine garden too.

The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe - "A hole in one experience"
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/20/2017 - 11:08pmThe Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe was a vision that began 25 years ago when the late Brooks Park and now General Manager Bobby King were talking about a complete experience for golfers who could also stay after a round of golf.
Park's grandfather David bought 571 acres of pastureland at Lake Tahoe in 1896. The property included the historic Friday's Station where the family operated it as a way station and butcher's shop for those crossing the terrain from 19818-20.

June 22, 2017 - 6:30pm The five-piece band Mo’z Motley Blues will perform blues, rock pop and soul at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm on Thursday, June 22.
Monique DeHaviland and the Mo’z Motley Blues Band have been performing originals and 5 decades of cover music with blues infected rock, pop, soul, and country repertoire geared to make audiences move from the minute the music begins.
The band was founded in 2012 and members come from the surrounding Reno-Tahoe area. Band members are Monique DeHaviland, Samantha Moore, Mylo McCormick, Don Lalonde and Ian McDonald on horns.

Western Nevada College hosting Journey of Hope
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/15/2017 - 5:45amPi Kappa Phi Fraternity’s Journey of Hope is a group of philanthropic-minded cyclists traveling across the country to help people with disabilities, and they'll be in Carson City on Friday, June 16.
Since 2014, Western Nevada College has hosted the group as they make their annual journey across 32 states, 12,000 combined miles of cycling.

The Live at Lakeview Summer Music Concert Series begins on Thursday, June 22, 2017. The summer concert series will occur every Thursday beginning on June 22nd to August 31st from 4:30-8:30. On these Thursday’s the boat ramp will open at 8am and close at 1pm. Boats will need to be off the lake by 1pm.

The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club is organizing the event which runs from June 9 to June 11. The club wanted to raise awareness, celebrate, honor and, most importantly, say thank you to the first responders of Douglas County, those who protect the community on a daily basis.

Starting June 22 and every Thursday until August 31, the free concerts will be at Lakeview Commons at the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Highway 50 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Toyota and the City of South Lake Tahoe are presenting the series with On Course Events.

Most will remember the Yardbirds for two things. First is the fact that being part of the band launched the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Secondly, the Yardbirds are remembered for their long list of classic hits including “For Your Love,” “Heart Full of Soul,” "Shapes of Things, "“I’m A Man” and “Over Under Sideways Down.”

Rainbow Sprinkles Donuts and Frozen Yogurt has been serving up delicious treats since they opened in January, and now they are ready to have their official grand opening on Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the parking lot outside their business. Owners Jody Filgo and Salllie Ross-Filgo will be celebrating with customers by providing music from DJ Diversity, handing out cool sunglasses, holding a raffle and having face painting.
Crowd turns out for South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Ceremony
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/29/2017 - 5:06pm"I'm so proud of our community and this great turnout," said South Lake Tahoe City Councilman Tom Davis during Monday's annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery.
A larger crowd than normal watched the ceremony which featured boys and girl scouts, music and speakers that included Gold Star Mom Patty Smith. Her son, Sgt. Timothy Michael Smith, was one of three South Lake Tahoe men to die in action since the September 11 attacks in 2001. Smith, 25, who died April 7, 2008, after his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.
The Meyers community plans OMG Fun Run and Angora Fire event

Costumes are encouraged and this year the best costume will receive a prize. Additional prizes will be awarded for the first to Reach the Top and Most Laps for the man, woman, and child (12 and under) divisions. Winners in each category and participants who complete at least three laps will have their names posted on the Meyers Community website after the event.

Guadalupe Ruiz and Tristan Klasko received recognition for their first-place award winning photographs submitted to the California Streaming Photo Contest sponsored by the California County Offices of Education. They each won a camera, tripod and other gifts. Their award winning photos will be used on a calendar distributed to teachers across the state.

Tintabulations Handbell Ensemble

the art or practice of bell ringing."
A homegrown community handbell ensemble, Tintabulations has grown from a small group of artistic director Barb Walsh's students to a nationally and internationally respected and sought after ensemble.

Victim identified in South Lake Tahoe collision: Memorial set for Friday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/18/2017 - 2:45pmArthur "Rocky" Heether has been identified as the man killed as he rode his bike across Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The 64-year-old man was struck by a vehicle.
Arthur, or Rocky as he was better known, was born in Oakland, California on January 26, 1053. He moved to the South Shore in the early 70's and worked construction on many Tahoe projects.

Why does each mind matter? Mental health is something we all have. Just as our bodies need attention, our minds also need nourishment and care. Suicide rates are increasing and there is a relationship between mental illness and suicide. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), about 90 percent of people who die by suicide have experienced mental health issues.

Lake Tahoe Brewfest to raise funds for Boys and Girls Club

The inaugural Lake Tahoe Brewfest is coming to the South Shore on Saturday, June 10 from noon to 5:00 p.m., and will be the first major event to bring together all of the breweries from the Lake Tahoe area’s emerging beer scene.
The Swiss Chalet Center at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sierra Boulevard will be the scene for the family-friendly event which will feature local arts and crafts, food, live music, games and more.
LTCC student art exhibition kicked off with reception and awards ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The annual Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Student Art Exhibition will be kicked off with a reception on Sunday, May 21 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the school's Commons. The public is invited to the free reception and there will be live music and refreshments.
This month-long art show is always a hit. Approximately 400 works of student art will be on display from digital art and printmaking to sculpture, a culmination of students' creations over the past year.

Family Resource Center's 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival Friday

The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center (FRC) is holding their 14th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival on Friday, May 5 starting at 5:00 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort. The community is invited to join them for an "all you can eat" Mexican food buffet, dancing with live music and a fabulous raffle.
Tickets can be purchased at the center for $20 or at the door for $25. Children ages 6-12 are $10 and 5 and under are free. Raffle tickets for chances at prizes donated by local businesses are available for $5 each of 5/$20.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department celebrates 50th anniversary with community party

The 50th anniversary of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) will be celebrated with a community party on Saturday, May 20 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lakeview Commons.
There will be food, music, the annual SLTPD awards ceremony, as well as booths to highlight what the department does for the community. Meet SLTPD staff and officers and enjoy fun and games.

SWAT booth – South Lake Tahoe Police Department SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) division will be hosting a booth with educational information.
Linkin Park with Machine Gun Kelly to play at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert series
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/02/2017 - 2:04pmLinkin Park announced their One More Light World Tour today, and they'll be making a stop at the lake on Friday, September 1 at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys.
They will hit the stage with special guest Machine Gun Kelly.
In an effort to put tickets into the hands of real fans, first access to tickets for the One More Light World Tour will be reserved exclusively for fans – not scalpers or bots, just as Eric Church has done with his tour (he follows Linkin Park on September 2 and 3).
South Lake Tahoe teachers show support for free and quality education for all students
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/01/2017 - 8:08pmMembers of the California Teacher's Association (CTA) and California Federation of Teachers (CFT) across the state brought out the posters and wore red on May 1 to advocate for public education and immigrant students.
South Lake Tahoe teachers joined in and greeted parents and students as they arrived for school Monday, displaying posters and letting students know they all had a right to quality and free public education, and asking all to take the pledge (as seen below).
Eric Church heads to the South Shore for two shows at outdoor arena
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/01/2017 - 4:33pmCountry music singer/songwriter Eric Church has announced the second half of his 2017 "Holdin' My Own" tour, and it begins on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe which he makes a stop at the Outdoor Concert Arena at Harveys on September 2 and 3.
Each show begins at 7:00 p.m.
Church's 62 stop tour has been thrilling audiences with three-hours of top music. It is unknown at this time what opening act(s), if any, will be with Church when he starts the final eight shows of 2017 in Lake Tahoe.
Ticketmaster will be selling tickets to the public on May 19.
