Kids who collected 44,000 dimes visit burned firefighter

For collecting $4,402 — the equivalent of 44,020 dimes —for the Leon S. Peters Burn Center, they got a wave and a smile from Pete Dern, the Fresno fire captain who is recovering from severe burns he got while battling a blaze.
“It made his day,” said Dern’s wife, Kelly Dern, who accepted a check from the students for the burn center.
“His face lit up,” said Dern’s daughter, McKenzie Dern.
15th Annual Snapshot Day of Lake Tahoe

“Snapshot Day creates the opportunity for people of all ages and experience levels to take part in protecting our watershed,” said Jesse Patterson, deputy director for the League to Save Lake Tahoe.

Graduation rates increase at South Tahoe High
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/28/2015 - 9:09pmState Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today reported California’s cohort graduation rate climbed for the fifth year in a row in 2014 to a record high, with the biggest jump taking place among English learners.
Among students who started high school in 2010-11, 80.8 percent graduated with their class in 2014, up 0.4 of a percentage point from the year before. The California graduation rate has increased substantially since the class of 2010 posted a 74.7 percent rate.

Lake Tahoe hikers in Nepal reportedly safe after 7.8 earthquake

Mel Kaida, 30, assistant operations director with Incline Village-based Tusker Trail Adventures, was also in the region and is reported to be safe, according to Andrew Springsteel, operations director for Tusker.

Spring Citizen's Academy application deadline extended

The public has two upcoming opportunities to plan the future of Lake Tahoe bike and pedestrian paths, the first of which will be held on Tuesday, April 14 at the South Lake Tahoe Library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Lake Tahoe Region Bike and Pedestrian Plan (BPP) was last updated in 2010, and because of this, the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO) is conducting an online survey as well as holding a meeting on both the North and South shores of Lake Tahoe.

Possible five new additions to U.S. Fish & Wildlife's endangered species list

They have found that there is substantial scientific or commercial information indicating that ESA protections may be warranted for the Mojave shoulderband snail, Clear Lake hitch, Relict dace, San Joaquin flower-loving fly, and Western pond turtle.
The public now has 60 days to read the findings and make comments if necessary.

Do-It-Yourself BMPs for Lake Tahoe residents and contractors

Due to limited grant funding, this will be the last year the workshops for both the contractor and the do-it-youselfers will be held. The Food Bank of El Dorado County will be in South Lake Tahoe to host a Mobile Food Pantry Distribution on Wednesday, March 25th, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. to bring food to those who need it most. They will be there rain or shine.
They welcome any locals who are struggling to make ends meet to come to the American Legion parking lot during that hour to receive supplemental groceries and fresh produce. The Food Bank will provide one allocation per household.

Agencies Seek Public Input on Lake Tahoe Pedestrian Network

Lake Tahoe snowmobilers face fines if they cause resource damage

This preventable problem is being seen around the lake where snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.
The U.S. Forest Service is asking snowmobilers to shift their activities to locations with adequate snow coverage, within permitted snowmobile areas. Snowmobile operators should avoid bare dirt and patchy snow and should not ride across streams or over small trees or brush.
