The Nevada Division of Tourism recognized outstanding members of the state’s rural tourism industry at the VolunTourism Awards Dinner April 27 in Elko. The awards ceremony was a highlight of the state’s annual Rural Roundup conference.

“Tourism is a significant component of rural Nevada economies,” Claudia Vecchio, Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs director, said. “It is a $2.3 billion industry that continues to grow thanks to the efforts of the tourism professionals in rural Nevada. It is our pleasure to recognize those efforts with this year’s VolunTourism awards.”

Gambit is this week's Pet of the Week! He is a very sweet and playful 5-year-old Pitty who needs a loving home. Gambit is a big boy and gets excited, so not the best fit for a home with toddlers or infants. He is good with other dogs, but not so good with cats.

Heavenly, last week’s Pet of the Week, is now at her forever home!

This week's pet of the week is Lucille, a corn snake. She is looking for a new home!
Lucille is about three feet long and eats frozen or thawed mice.

If you adopt Lucille you get her three foot tank with lid to take home with, but you'll need lighting and heating equipment. If you wish to adopt her, you must bring the equipment to the shelter with you.

Santa Claus has come early for some lucky residents. For the month of December all pet adoption fees will be covered in El Dorado County after a generous donation by TravelLite RV Rentals in Placerville.

Their donation covers the adoption fees at both the Diamond Springs and South Lake Tahoe shelters.

There are currently eight dogs and nine cats at the South Lake Tahoe shelter, all waiting to go to a good home. Among them are two boxer mixes, one boxer, one Australian Shepherd and a Siberian Husky.

Purrfect timing for this question as it actually looks like we are going to get a winter this year! Here are some winter tips for all pets.

Keep your cats inside. During any time of the year, cats that are allowed to stray can become lost or stolen, injured or killed. They can also be exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife.

I frequently see young men riding skateboards or bicycles with small dogs running along beside them. How much strenuous exercise is good for little dogs and how can the dog owner know when he is pushing the dog too hard? Dogs will run really hard to stay up with their owner. How much is too much?

This week's Lake Tahoe Humane Society Pet of the Week is Troy. He is about three-years-old. Troy prefers to be an only cat, and has been living as an indoor-outdoor cat (though cats in Lake Tahoe being kept indoors is much safer for them). He ended up at Animal Services because he got out, and his owners never looked for him.

This week's pet of the week is Bear, a very handsome two-year-old German Shepard-Malamute mix. He is a lovely dog and is not happy being stuck in a cage at the shelter.

Cookiebun and Selenium, the rabbits, are still looking for a home

We have two "Pets of the Week" this week, Trinity and Spike. They are a 7-year-old brother and sister pair and we want to keep them together.

They are declawed on their front paws. They have lived with dogs and other cats.

Spike is a little shy whilst Trinity is more of a player and cuddler.

This week's Pet of the Week is Harley. he is about two-years-old, gets along with other cats, is good with kids and is a real lap-kitty.

Harley is a "super nice boy and well behaved!"
