Of those, 16 are in El Dorado Hills, 9 in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, 17 in Greater Placerville, 1 in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, 2 in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, 4 in North County, 2 in South County, 8 in Lake Tahoe region. Bread & Broth 4 Kids moves weekly food bag program due to storm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students receiving weekly food bags from Bread & Broth 4 Kids will be able to pick them up at normal locations on Friday this week, due to the pending blizzard.

Buses from Lake Tahoe Unified School District normally distribute the bags to students with the breakfasts and lunches on Wednesdays, but with the possibility of a snow day and heavy snow, Bread & Broth moved to Friday for safety concerns.

STPUD extends COVID-19 rate relief program

The South Tahoe Public Utility District Board of Directors extended the COVID-19 Rate Relief Program to assist residents and businesses that are facing financial
hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The District’s COVID-19 Rate Relief Program offers a 50 percent credit up to $3,000 for the next quarterly sewer bill for customers in need.

“Extending the rate relief program is necessary because it’s obvious that the community is still suffering from the financial effects of COVID,” says Kelly Sheehan, Board President.

Blizzard Warning now in effect as Atmospheric River brings feet of snow to the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The warnings have been coming for over a week, and now the day weather experts have been warning us about is here. For snow that has been measured in inches so far this winter, a big change hits Lake Tahoe and the Sierra starting Tuesday night when it will be measured in feet.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has now upgraded the storm warnings to blizzard level.

Reminder to keep up on pet's vaccines after rabid skunks found in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The identification of three rabid skunks on the West Slope has prompted the El Dorado County Animal Services to remind pet owners to keep up on their animal's rabies vaccines.

Lake effect snow could bring additional six inches of snow to South Shore Lake Tahoe Monday night

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a new Winter Weather Advisory for Monday at 4:00 p.m. to Tuesday morning at 4:00 a.m. This new advisory is due to what is known as "lake effect snow." Six more inches of snow can drop on the south shore of Lake Tahoe area this evening.

Lake effect occurs when a mass of unstable cold air moves over a mass of water that is warm in comparison. The lake provides moisture for the band of weather moving over it.

Cal Tahoe JPA seeks bids to remodel old jail for new headquarters

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bids are currently being sought for the remodel project at the new home of the California Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority (CalTahoe) in South Lake Tahoe. They have been without a permanent home since early 2020 when South lake Tahoe Fire Rescue took back its Station 2 for fire and medic operations.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Snow, snow, and some more snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A wintry week is on tap for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Western Nevada with at least two winter storms impacting the region. The first arrives Sunday night and the second is shaping up as a blockbuster storm for the Sierra with wind and snow impacts Tuesday night through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. An active and moist onshore flow is forecast to continue through the weekend and into early February.

Blizzard conditions expected this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An active winter weather pattern will prevail through much of next week as a series of progressively stronger winter storms push through the Sierra and western Nevada. A significant winter storm is looking increasingly likely by late Tuesday through at least Thursday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Additional waves of moderate to heavy snowfall are possible through next weekend.

Record number of Bald Eagles found at Lake Tahoe during annual count

NCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — A record number of Bald Eagles were counted at Lake Tahoe during the recent annual survey conducted by the Tahoe Institute of Natural Science (TINS) and its team of 200 volunteers.

This year 42 Bald Eagles were found, surpassing the previous record of 27 set in 2017.

The record number of volunteers are double the number who turned out for last year's event, part of why TINS believes this was the most accurate count to date. TINS took over local coordination of the national tracking effort nine years ago.

Construction bids now being accepted for Spooner Lake State Park improvements

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – Nevada State Parks is seeking construction bids for Phase 1 of the Spooner Frontcountry Improvement Project. Phase 1 will involve a complete redesign and update of the over 35-year-old facilities, and construction of a new visitor center and amphitheater at Spooner Lake. Proposals will be accepted at the Nevada Division of State Parks office until March 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. PST.

Al Roker to discuss climate change at Tahoe's Operation Sierra Storm

Al Roker of NBC’s Today Show fame, will discuss his passion, interest and concerns about climate change, as well as his storied career as keynote speaker at Operation Sierra Storm, the annual television meteorologists’ conference at Lake Tahoe. The public is invited to tune in via Facebook to watch Roker on Monday, January 25.

Operation Sierra Storm (OSS) in an annual weather conference held on the South Shore. Due to health and safety restrictions, the public is unable to attend Monday's event in person, but they are welcome to participate via Facebook.

Schools plan return to in-person instruction in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If COVID-19 numbers continue on their current downward trajectory, students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will be able to return to the classroom February 1 when Phase 2 of reopening plans resumes.

District officials announced Friday they are "cautiously optimistic" about the return to in-person learning in grades TK through 8. LTUSD has been monitoring the local COVID-19 data and case numbers have been stable or trending down, including decreasing cases among their staff, over the last several days.

MontBleu staff credited with saving man's life in swimming pool

STATELINE, Nev. - Staff members at MontBleu Casino Resort are being credited with saving the lives of two people who had been swimming in the hotel's swimming pool. One of the swimmers, a 25-year-old man from Fairfield, Calif., had been underwater for almost two-and-a-half minutes before being pulled from the water.

TRPA updated Lake Tahoe Watercraft Inspection program and fees for 2021

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. — The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board has approved updates to Lake Tahoe watercraft inspection fees and added enhancements to make inspections more convenient following an unprecedented year for the program, the agency said today.

Is the COVID-19 surge over in El Dorado County?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are some promising signs that the COVID-19 surge is over in El Dorado County. If current data continues in the direction it has been headed, El Dorado County is likely near the peak of the post holidays COVID-19 surge.

The surge of cases and hospitalizations began two weeks after Halloween, then continued through the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years holidays.

The El Dorado County Public Health Director Dr. Nancy Williams says we won't reliably know until another week or two has passed if the surge has hit its peak.

Amador County man arrested in Reno after Pine Grove woman's body found

1/22/21 UPDATE: The murder suspect Jerry Lee Adams Jr. has been arrested in Reno. For the past two days, investigators from the Amador County Sheriff's Office followed up on multiple tips regarding the suspect's whereabouts. On Friday, January 22, 2021, they developed information that Adams was possibly in the Reno area. This information was provided to the Reno Police Department and at approximately 4:00 p.m., Adams was located inside a Reno area casino and arrested for the murder of Savana Lee Burger.

Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe ahead of series of storms

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Lake Wind Advisory to be in effect from 1:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday, January 22. Southwest winds from 15-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected at Lake Tahoe. Waves 3-5 feet from mid-lake to the north and east shores are possible.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Meyers business helps remove snow play trash; Clean Tahoe can direct others to litter hot spots

A growing problem is the people finding whatever patch of snow is available, normally in areas not previously used for snow play.

TRPA Tahoe Blue Crew uses day of volunteering to clean up snow play area

STATELINE, Nev. - Using the MLK Day of Service to volunteer, staff from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) spent Monday picking up trash around the informal sled hill between Heavenly Village and Harrah's Tahoe.

The 11 volunteers picked up 68.5 lbs of trash equaling 90 gallons of volume. TRPA is part of the League to Save Lake Tahoe Blue Crew and have committed their volunteers to working in the area twice a month. They'll be back later this week to clean along Montreal Road and Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

Planning Commission denies changes to planned cannabis microbusiness in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is now an open license for a South Lake Tahoe cannabis microbusiness after one of those approved in 2019 will not finish up the process of opening. On January 14, 2021, the City Planning Commission denied a request from James Street LLC to change the name of the approved operator and extend their deadline to open by six months.

Yes, we are 10 members strong, and our good-natured motto is, "I don't give a (fill in the blank with your own inappropriate word) what you think."

Three suspects arrested after attempted home invasion robbery in Meyers

MEYERS, Calif. - Three men were arrested early Saturday morning following an attempted home invasion robbery at a Meyers residence.

Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) were dispatched to a home at 4:34 a.m. January 16 after dispatch received a call from the residents. They said two men entered their home and attempted to conduct a robbery while using violence. EDSO said the residents resisted and there was some "physical conflict" between two or three residents and the two suspects.

The two suspects then left the home in a vehicle driven by a third suspect.

South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tamara Wallace: Better days ahead

“You’ve got to count to three.” Those were the words of advice attributed to Norm Woods one of the first five city council members. The Cityhood project in 1965 was spearheaded by the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce with all five of that first council members coming from the Chamber Board ranks. Norm served as one of the first rotating Mayors and many times thereafter. His advice was offered to the citizens who were newly elected to subsequent councils.

Wind and chance of snow in the weekly forecast for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a High Wind Warning in place from 10:00 p.m. Monday to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. The winds begin to increase Monday out of the northeast as a mostly dry low pressure system drops into the region according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Expect northeasterly flow to ramp up Monday night with damaging winds possible for the Sierra. Temperatures will cool back toward seasonal averages early this week with better potential for precipitation heading into the final week of January.

High Wind Warning issued for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 10:00 p.m. Monday to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Expect winds 20-30 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected, mainly above 6500 feet. Under that elevation, winds are expected 15-25 mph with gusts 30-45 mph.

Over the ridges, winds 60-80 mph are forecast with gusts exceeding 130 mph.

The winds will be coming from the east/northeast.

The warning is mainly for the western half of the Lake Tahoe Basin, Southern Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierra Counties, and northern Mono County west of Highway 395.

Where and how to get COVID-19 vaccines in counties around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With five different counties in two different states surrounding Lake Tahoe, there are different procedures concerning COVID-19 vaccines depending on which area one resides. As more doses of the vaccine become available, each county is in charge of its own vaccination rollout. Most in California will be vaccinated at community vaccination sites, doctor’s offices, clinics or pharmacies, depending on their county's plans.

On the Nevada side of the lake the state has developed "lanes" instead of the California side "tiers." All information is listed below.

South Lake Tahoe joins other communities in National Moment of Unity and Remembrance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe and other communities around the lake will join the nation on Tuesday, January 19 as they honor those who have died during the pandemic.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Lake Valley Fire Honor Guard will take part in the nationwide bell-ringing ceremony at 2:30 p.m. There will not be a public ceremony but all are encouraged to ring bells or turn their outdoor lights on to participate in the memorial as well.

Importance of keeping smoke detectors up to date

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Time is of the essence when fire hits your home. Things can rapidly change from smoke to flames, sometimes giving those inside very little time to get outside to safety.

Even though smoke detectors have been required in new construction and in homes undergoing a remodel for decades, not all homes have working detectors. They are broken, have a dead battery, or missing completely.

Fundraising campaign underway to add dog water station in Rabe Meadow

STATELINE, Nev. - The very popular Rabe Meadows to Nevada Beach Trail, also known as the Lam Watah Trail, has no water stations along the route for dogs and their humans, and a local resident is trying to change that.

In cooperation with Douglas County, the U.S. Forest Service and Lake Tahoe Planning and Permitting LLC, Liz Lawton would like to raise the funds necessary to purchase and install a doggie drinking fountain and water bottle filling station. It would be located at the trailhead near the intersection of Kahle Drive and US50 by the restrooms.
