SLTPD honors and promotes during National Police Week
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/20/2018 - 10:32pmThe South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) held the annual awards ceremony Thursday, honoring the retirement of K9 Tara, the promotion of Jeff Roberson to Sergeant, awards for bravery and for service.
The celebration was started with the National Anthem sung by South Tahoe High School senior Caroline Krolicki and a presentation of the colors by the department's Honor Guard.

California experienced the deadliest, largest, and most destructive wildfires in its history. Just a few hours-drive from Tahoe, more than 40 people died and thousands of homes were destroyed in the wine country and North Bay last October. In Southern California, the Thomas Fire ravaged communities and forest lands last December with damaging flooding and landslides piled on after the fire subsided.

After Tahoe's celebrated July Fourth festivities, our beaches are thrashed with trash, which can hurt wildlife and lake clarity. Each year, hundreds of Tahoe residents and visitors turn out for our largest cleanup of the year to remove litter from our beaches. Help Keep Tahoe Blue by joining a beach cleanup site!
We will provide cleanup materials, refreshments and raffle prizes.
Be sure to bring:
Reusable water bottle, sunscreen, cleanup gloves (if you have them), hat, sunglasses and wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as well as any snacks that you would like.
Precautionary boil water notice issued for Cave Rock and Skyland water customers
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/17/2018 - 1:10pmA precautionary boil water notice has been issued for the Cave Rock Water and Skyland System in Douglas County due to a computer error at the Cave Rock Water Treatment Plant. Because of this, each customer in the area has received a notice hung on their doors, advising them to take precautions and boil their water until further notice.
Water officials need to recover the data from the error or take (2) consecutive bacteriological samples, back to back, 24 hours apart. Douglas County is moving forward with efforts to recover the data and to collect samples for testing.

June 9, 2018 (All day) Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to this fun, hands-on restoration day. By pitching in, you are improving the watershed habitats that surround Lake Tahoe. Healthy forests act as natural pollution filters to Keep Tahoe Blue.
Participants at the Spring Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day will help assess the work done from a past event and continue important work. A light breakfast, refreshments and a prize will be provided to all volunteers.

Off-duty firefighters save life of man who fell off kayak in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/15/2018 - 12:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 22-year-old South Lake Tahoe man is alive today thanks to efforts of rescuers who were on the beach of Tahoe Beach Retreat on Thursday, May 10, when he went underwater after being on a kayak.
At 2:46 p.m., a call was made to 911 about a drowning man in the lake. When the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department arrived three minutes later, two off-duty firemen were on the scene already, along with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

One driver dies in truck crash in Alpine County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/09/2018 - 5:19pmUPDATE 5/10/18 10:30 a.m.: State Route 88 remains closed near Woodfords Thursday morning as crews work to remove the demolished tanker truck involved in Wednesday's fatal crash.
Gregory Brown, 46, of Oakland, California has been identified as the driver, whose body was found at the scene nine hours after the crash.
Emergency personnel responded to the 10:05 a.m. call on May 9, 2018 on State Route 88 near the Caltrans maintenance yard west of Woodfords and the SR-89 junction. Upon arrival they found an overturned tanker and detached cab off the roadway.

Historic Tahoe Trout Farm opens for season

For over 70 years the trout farm has been providing families with the experience of fishing in their ponds and catching their dinner, or lots of dinners, as there is no limit to the number of fish caught.
Lake Tahoe area boat inspection stations opening for 2018 season

The fight against aquatic invasive species (AIS) has gone on for the last ten years, and officials say a large part of their success in keeping the lake clear are the stations located around the lake.
Since 2018, Tahoe Resource Conservation District (RCD) inspectors have performed over 70,000 vessel inspections, decontaminated 32,576 of them using hot water, and have found hundreds of vessels containing foreign species such as mussels, snails and plant material.
Conservancy grants funds to City for purchase of homes in Bijou Park Creek watershed
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/30/2018 - 12:09amTwo more properties in the Bijou Park Creek flood zone will be acquired by the City of South Lake Tahoe thanks to a $793,991 grant awarded by the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) this week.
This makes three properties that the City will purchase from willing property owners with grant funds provided through Proposition 1 and Proposition 50 funds authorized by the CTC. The two this week, oft-flooded and located at 3593 Shirley Avenue and 3590 Bill Avenue in South Lake Tahoe will join the parcel at 3747 Woodbine Road which was authorized to be purchased in September 2017.
Upper Truckee Marsh closed to dogs May 1 - July 31
Submitted by paula on Sun, 04/29/2018 - 10:13pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.- Dogs will be banned from the Upper Truckee Marsh area starting Mary 1 due to protection of a critical breeding habitat for special, threatened and endangered species such as the Willow Flycatcher.
This is the California Tahoe Conservancy's annual seasonal dog closure and it will end July 31.
Beginning August 1, dogs will again be permitted access to the Upper Truckee Marsh, if they are on leash. The Conservancy-owned Cove East property, west of the river, remains open for year-round, leashed dog access.

Improvements will include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.

Fuel reduction plan released for over 3700 acres of National Forest lands

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) announced the the final decision on the project last week. This project helps decrease the risk of wildland fires and complements defensible space treatments implemented by local municipal fire districts on adjacent non-federal lands.

Dauntless Air out of Appleton, Minnesota brought two Air Tractor AT-802F Fire Boss planes to town at the request of the United States Forest Service (USFS) and put on a demonstration for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, CalFire and the USFS from both Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe National Forest.
Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra fundraiser Saturday: Find out where donations go

What many don't know is where those donations go. There was question recently in the community about donations, so the club wanted to clear up any misunderstandings.
The club recently created a diagram to better explain where each penny goes as they don't have must left over funds after they issue scholarships, grants and other forms of financial support.

Power out to some South Lake Tahoe homes after car hits fire hydrant
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/18/2018 - 3:30pmLiberty Utilities has had to de-energize underground lines in the South Lake Tahoe area so a damaged fire hydrant could be repaired by South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD).
Approximately 115 customers have been without power for the past couple of hours at the request of STPUD after a car ran into a fire hydrant and they had to get underground and repair it.
The hydrant is located on Friant Drive between Matheson Drive and Murietta Drive. All should be back on by 4:00 p.m. according to STPUD.
Once water crews are done the power will be restored.
New South Lake Tahoe communications system; Price tag close to $4M

1) There are three systems working totally separately: the police, fire and public works departments;
2) Trees have grown since the system was installed 53 years ago, now blocking signals through the town;
3) Having functioning radio frequencies near water is challenging.

Deadline looming for Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/11/2018 - 12:54pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project was slated to begin as soon as the 2018 building season began, but some bureaucratic red tape has delayed it. The .6 mile stretch of road will receive Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and water quality improvements.
USFS gives opening dates for Lake Tahoe recreation areas

Weather and snow conditions permitting, Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on Saturday, April 14, 2018. Baldwin and Nevada beaches open April 28. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center opens Friday, May 25. The Tallac Historic Site parking area opens Tuesday, May 15, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 26.

Lake Tahoe almost full, Upper Truckee River above flood stage
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/07/2018 - 6:03pmThe rain in the Sierra Thursday and Friday melted snow, sending the water down into rivers and the lake faster than normal. While the Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe is over the banks and flooding the meadow, Lake Tahoe got closer to full.
The Upper Truckee is moving at 1960 cubic feet per minute, much faster than the 112 feet per minute just a week ago. It is also just over 11 feet in height, a few inches above the flood stage per NOAA-NWS.
Lake Tahoe measured at 6228.7 ft above sea level on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The legal limit is 6229.1, the natural rim is 6223 ft.
Tahoe Truckee Snapshot Day

May 19, 2018 - 9:00am Join the fun as we capture the water quality of the Tahoe Truckee Watershed through this hands-on monitoring event. Meet at Lake Tahoe Community College Aspen Room Saturday, May 19 at 9 am. Teams led by trained team leaders will then go out to local streams and rivers throughout South Tahoe to collect data to create a snapshot in time of water quality. The data collected can be used for restoration projects and overall watershed protection.
Wear layers, sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen. Be prepared to possibly wade in the water. Bring a reusable water bottle.

There is a flood watch in effect from Friday, April 6, 05:00 p.m. until Sunday, April 8 at 5:00 a.m. The main concern is the potential for flooding along creeks, streams, rivers and in urban areas.

Bottled or boiled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation, until further notice. Questions regarding pets and livestock should be directed to your veterinarian.

She has earned the name "Angel of Tahoe" through her large donations, including $10 million to Barton Memorial Hospital for their new Robert Maloff Center of Excellence (Wellness and Sports Performance Center) and $5.8 million to Lake Tahoe Community College for the Lisa Maloff University Center. Sierra snowpack: 52% of average, water content at 49%
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/02/2018 - 12:11pmThe water content in the Sierra snowpack was measured in Phillips April 2, 2018 and it is at 49 percent of the April 1 average.
The California Department of Water Resources snow survey team did their final physical measurement of the year at their normal location in Phillips at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road, west of Lake Tahoe.
Depth of the snow was measured at 32.1 inches and it contained 12.4 inches of water which is 49 percent of long term average for April 1 at the location.
The snowpack measured in at 52 percent of average.

Financed by a generous donation by local philanthropist Lisa Maloff, the new water safety rescue boat bears her name.
