PG&E cutting power to 70,000 Sierra Foothills customers due to fire danger
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/14/2018 - 8:04pmPacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is in emergency mode in extreme fire-risk areas in Butte, Sierra, Placer, Nevada, El Dorado, Amador, Plumas, Calaveras and Yuba counties due to Red Flag warnings by the National Weather Service. These shutoffs will affect about 70,000 customers.
South Lake Tahoe is served by Liberty Utilities and not part of the utility company's plan to start proactively shutting off power for safety as early as 5 p.m. Sunday and continuing through the evening.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/11/2018 - 9:48pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It looks like a prolonged quiet period of classic fall weather in South Lake Tahoe for the next 1-2 weeks with a couple of slight bumps in the road for parts of the Sierra.
A brush by of a cold front to the north could bring some gusty northeast winds and a recharge of cold air with widespread hard freezes looking likely for Monday and Tuesday mornings. South Lake Tahoe is forcast to be in the teens Sunday night, Monday morning.

region, which will bring chances for light rain and mountain obscurations in the eastern Sierra. Gusty east-northeasterly winds as high as 60 kts are expected over the Sierra Sunday evening into Monday morning, as well as the possibility of mountaintop turbulence west of the Sierra crest.
After the cool temperatures, brisk north winds and drier conditions for the
remainder of weekend, temperatures will warm a few degrees early next week with overall drier conditions and lighter winds expected.

Fire Weather Watch Saturday in Lake Tahoe; Change in weather ahead

Winds will be from the south to southwest 15-25 mph with gusts to 40 mph in the valleys and on the slopes, gusts from 55 to 75 mph on the ridges.
Humidity will be 20-27 precent.
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
First week of Fall to be a warm one in South Lake Tahoe

Temperatures were slightly above average with clear skies, much of what is in store for the Lake Tahoe, the Sierra and western Nevada this coming week.
All will remain dry through next week with warm afternoons and chilly mornings. Breezy afternoons are forecast this weekend, followed by several days of lighter winds.

The red flag warnings and lake wind advisories have expired and winds will return to more typical afternoon breezes with temperatures near normal for mid-September.
Dry conditions prevail with near normal temperatures through next week.

High fire danger for Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada

The Lake Wind Advisory will run until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday. Winds will be from the Southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Wave heights will be from one to three feet with highest waves from mid-lake to east shores. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions
improve.

Slight winds with mostly clear skies will prevail this week in South Lake Tahoe. There will be a couple of weak disturbances Monday and Tuesday, giving a chance for cumulus buildups over the mountains and possibly a stray afternoon thunderstorm over the southern Sierra around Mono County.

Sadly, most fires are human-caused and completely preventable if the public would take the time to better understand conditions that are favorable for fire starts. Fire prevention is the key to keeping our communities and forests safe from wildfire.
Although fire season is now considered a year-round event, wildfires mostly occur in the late summer and early fall when temperatures are still high, humidity is low and vegetation that can feed a wildfire is extremely dry.
Windy around Lake Tahoe Sunday, mild week ahead

Dry conditions and typical breezes are expected through Saturday evening with breezy winds and critical fire weather concerns increasing for Sunday as a dry trough approaches the region. No precipitation is expected for the next week.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/14/2018 - 10:28pmWidely scattered thunderstorms will be leaving the Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley Wednesday with no storms expected Thursday onward according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. There will be breezy and drier conditions Thursday and Friday will lead to cooler overnight lows this weekend and early next week.
Smoke from the Donnell Fire moved north along with the active weather pattern on Tuesday, resulting in the smell of smoke along with some areas of rain and thunder.

Areas of smoke and haze will continue to degrade air quality, especially north and east of the Donnell Fire. There will be a slight chance of thunderstorms well south of Highway 50 this weekend with chances increasing and spreading farther north next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, areas at greatest risk for unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality are from Sonora Pass to South Lake Tahoe and Carson City.
Smoke in Lake Tahoe Basin coming from Northern California fires
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/03/2018 - 2:52pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Friday morning started off clear and sunny, but by mid-morning smoke from from several California fires filled the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The smoke Friday has been a combination of the Carr Fire, the Mendocino Complex fires (Ranch Fire and River Fire) and the two western El Dorado County fires according to the USFS office in South Lake Tahoe. The Whaleback Fire and Ferguson Fire are also burning north and south of the lake.
South Lake Tahoe had a warm July; Week of 80s ahead

After such a warm month, August is starting out much the same.
Dry, warm week ahead for South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/28/2018 - 7:50amThere will be widespread haze around Lake Tahoe this weekend as smoke from the Carr Fire near Redding and the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite comes into the Basin. Even with the resulting hazy skies, the air quality has remained in the "good" range with a current AQI of 15 on Saturday morning.
Prolonged heat will affect the region well into next week with highs above 100 degrees in Western Nevada and above 85 near the Sierra. There will be increased winds each afternoon and early evening Wednesday through Friday.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/22/2018 - 5:16pmThe National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Glenbrook, Alpine County, Place County, El Dorado County, Washoe County, Douglas County an Western Carson City from 6:06 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. Sunday, July 22.
Radar has indicated a strong cell sitting over South Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay, bringing a chance of quarter size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. In heavy hit areas, expect hail damage to vehicles along with wind damage to roofs, siding, fencing and trees.
Another strong thunderstorm cell is above Kirkwood.
Flash flood watch for Lake Tahoe, Reno, Carson Valley and Mono County
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/22/2018 - 8:42amSmoke from the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite continues to move into the Lake Tahoe Basin. On Sunday, that smoke will be joined by clouds and a 50 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms starting after 12:00 p.m. and going into the evening.
On Saturday, hail and rain was very scattered, with people in the Kingsbury Grade and Heavenly Valley area seeing several minutes of a hail storm accompanied by heavy rain, with areas west of Ski Run Boulevard not seeing a drop of rain.
Flash flood warning in place for Douglas and Mono Counties
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/20/2018 - 1:36pmThunderstorms are developing early this afternoon in Mono, Mineral and southern Lyon counties and heading towards Douglas County and Reno. Storms are expected to become stronger through the afternoon as they spread north.
Nickel size hail, frequent lightning, and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with these storms. Localized flash flooding will also be possible, especially in steep terrain and over wildfire burn scars.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for July 20 from 2:18 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Smoke continues to fill Lake Tahoe Basin: Chance of rain in forecast
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/20/2018 - 10:53amThe Feguson fire burning west of Yosemite continues to send smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin. Since starting on July 13, the fire has consumed 22,892 acres and containment remains at 7 percent. It is burning in steep, hard to access terrain.
Several areas around Highway 140 reamin under mandatory evacuations and evacuation advisories.
2,711 personnel, including firefighters from South Lake Tahoe, are currently engaged on the fire which includes 203 engines, 39 water tenders, 16 helicopters, 58 handcrews, and 41 dozers.
Smoke from the fire is expected for at least the next two days.
Widespread haze from Yosemite fire to be in Lake Tahoe basin another day
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/17/2018 - 10:18pmThe Ferguson Fire burning west of Yosemite has been the cause of widespread haze in the Lake Tahoe basin, with more expected on Wednesday.
So far, 12,525 acres have burned and the fire is five percent contained. There are road closures and evacuations in the area. Air quality could be degraded at times mainly south of Lake Tahoe, but make sure to check in the Airnow.gov for the latest air quality for your district.
Chance of thunderstorms return to Lake Tahoe next weekend
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/15/2018 - 11:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the Ferguson Fire outside Yosemite is moved into Lake Tahoe and Carson City area today and more smoke is expected again early Monday. As of Sunday night, the fire has burned 4,310 acres and is two percent contained. An evacuation advisory is in place for the Western Yosemite area.
High pressure will build overhead and bring very hot conditions to Western Nevada Tuesday through Wednesday and warm conditions to the mountains. The high will
begin to move east on Thursday with thunderstorm chances increasing along with gradually cooling temperatures.

We will see afternoon and evening breezes each day through Monday, with lighter winds for the rest of next week. There will be increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms by mid to late next week.
Temps will be in the 80s and above average but forecast highs are not going to be record breaking in South Lake Tahoe.

Winds will be light with high pressure over the region. North to northwest winds today will keep smoke from the Lions Fire along the Sierra Crest near and south of Mammoth Mountain according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Winds may be gusty during the Independence Day holiday. This may lead to

Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2-3 feet. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Dry grass and gusty winds will create dangerous conditions for wildfire should a spark set them off....use care when outdoors as the fuels are ready.
Those heading out on Lake Tahoe and other area lakes need to be aware of hazardous boating conditions starting Friday, then going through Saturday. Remember to wear your personal flotation device at all times.

A cycle of pleasant mornings and thunderstorms with rain in the afternoons will possibly repeat for two more days. A low pressure is approaching the west coast. This low will move inland and bring gusty winds Wednesday and Thursday, along with some cooling and continued chances for showers and thunderstorms.
By Friday, generally dry conditions move in with a warming trend through the weekend.

There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning, calling for snow above 8000 feet. 1-3" of snow with isolated areas seeing up to 6". Areas affected are Mt Rose, Carson, Ebbetts, Sonora and Tioga passes and high elevation hiking trails around the Lake Tahoe area, Alpine County and Mono County.

This was a great day to get out on the bike, work in the garden or do anything outside, and more of the same is ahead for a few days. A weak system is expected to bring an increase in clouds and minor breezes Sunday, with a few showers possible north of Susanville, but not down to Lake Tahoe. Thursday's forecast is a high of 68, and the record was 71 set in 1992. In true spring fashion, a chance of thunderstorms in the Sierra will last from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Thursday
The heat and sunny skies then go away and there is a chance of rain and snow Saturday through Tuesday, with the daily highs below average.

As the rigorous trough leaves the Sierra, mild and dry conditions return, but are short lived as more storm systems are on the horizon. Gusty winds and light amounts of rain and snow are possible starting Tuesday and lasting into early
Thursday. Much colder temperatures develop by early Thursday. This will be a fast moving system with a limited moisture tap, but another one is due after next weekend.

Coming in from the west is a significant storm with gusty winds and heavy rains Friday through Sunday. The storm is a warm and wet one so there will be the potential for flooding along creeks, streams and rivers.
Monday will be back in the mid-50s.

Prior to that warning is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect until 11:00 p.m. Friday.
A break in precipitation is expected for most of today. Gusty winds develop this afternoon ahead of a couple fast-moving and colder storms that will move through with some snow for northeast California into northwest Nevada this weekend. A warmer and drier pattern is expected next week with temperatures trending above

Avalanche Watch - The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a backcountry avalanche watch for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to 7:00 a.m. Friday between Yuba Pass at the north and Ebbetts Pass to the south.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/19/2018 - 10:10amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The week is starting out beautiful: blue skies, great powder and mile temperatures, but it won't last long.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, light valley rain and Sierra snow and rain will develop Tuesday and Tuesday night, with some travel impacts possible for Sierra and northeast California passes. A second system, which is much stronger, will bring lower valley rain, Sierra rain and snow, and gusty winds starting on Wednesday and continuing until a cold front moves through late Thursday into Friday morning.

From the storm Wednesday, Sierra-at-Tahoe is reporting 9"-13" of new snow in the last 24 hours, 16" at Kirkwood, 12" at Heavenly, 12" at Squaw Valley, 11" at Northstar and " at 10" at Mt. Rose.
Winter Storm Watch in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday-Wednesday

There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 14.
Windy day around Lake Tahoe Thursday, rain expected over the weekend

There is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect until 4:00 p.m. Thursday with winds 15 mph to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Wave heights could be 2-3 feet from mid-lake to the north and east shores.
