SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms and strong outflow winds for Monday, July 27 from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

Normally, the Basin averages six Red Flag Warnings per season, and this makes four - and it's still July. Please remember all outdoor sources of open flame are prohibited until the Red Flag Warning declaration expires, and that includes gas/propane fire pits and grills.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A strong cold front will move through the region Saturday bringing a dramatic change to the weather with breezy winds, rain, snow, and much colder weather returning for the weekend. according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Now is the time to prepare for winter travel if you have plans to drive over the mountains, and to prepare your garden and irrigation for possible freezing temperatures.

The most common misunderstanding about swimming in Lake Tahoe is that people can suffer from hypothermia, which leads to death. The real truth is that "cold water shock" will kill much quicker than hypothermia ever will.

"The sudden lowering of skin temperature on immersion in cold water represents one of the most profound stimuli that the body can encounter." Golden and Tipton in Essentials of Sea Survival

Those in South Lake Tahoe this weekend had sun and warm temperatures as they enjoyed fall colors, the marathon, Columbus Day and fall chores, but the weather is about to change by Friday.

It will be windy, with gusts up to 40 mph, strong enough to cause damage through Western Nevada and in the Sierra.

"Confidence is increasing for a high wind event Friday with strong winds continuing Saturday and Sunday," said the National Weather Service in Reno. "Damaging winds will be possible along with impacts to travel for high profile vehicles, aviation, and high fire danger."

"Swim Smart, Swim Safe: know the dangers of cold water" is the message coming from agencies responsible for boating and water safety on Lake Tahoe, especially after the recent deaths in the lake of two healthy men.

Drowning incidents from boating, paddling and swimming often share the same cause, "cold water shock," an involuntary gasp reflex caused by sudden immersion in cold water. Swimmers and boaters suddenly exposed to the cold waters of Lake Tahoe may experience rapid breathing, gasping, fainting, muscle failure and immediate risk of drowning.

Scattered afternoon thunderstorms are expected through the 4th of July holiday weekend for the Sierra and western Nevada. Heavy rain with localized flash flooding will be possible in some areas of the Sierra and surrounding valleys.

The National Weather Service in Reno has said to expect abundant lightning, small hail, erratic wind gusts up to 50 mph, and rapid drops in temperatures. Temperatures can quickly drop by 30 to 40 degrees under thunderstorms in combination with very heavy rain, which poses a hypothermia threat to those outdoors.

While saying South Lake Tahoe shattered the high temperature record may be a bit strong, the area eclipsed the former record by four degrees on Sunday.

The local high was 70 degrees, erasing the former record of 66 set in 2004. The average high for March 29 is 48.

On Saturday, March 28, a new record high of 66 was recorded. The previous high was 64, set in 1986. Friday's high of 69 fell one degree shy of a record.

Another record is expected to be broken on Monday, March 30. The forecast high is 67. The current record for the date is 64 sent in 1986.

Light snow, rain, wind, clouds and rainbows were all part of the weather day Saturday in South Lake Tahoe. The weather front is on it's way out, leaving a week of sunny and clear skies and mild temperatures.

Approximately .44" of rain fell at lake level.

The week's forecast according to weather.gov:

Sunday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 44. West wind around 5 mph becoming northeast in the morning. Overnight, mostly clear, with a low around 21. East wind around 5 mph.

A cold front located over the Pacific will move into the Sierra on Tuesday with wind gusts Tuesday afternoon into evening reaching 45 mph in valley locations and ridge gusts up to 100 mph. These winds will result in choppy lake waters and blowing dust on I-80 and highways 50 and 95.

All eyes are on the solar wind data to note the expected passage on Saturday of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from Thursday's solar event.
