LTUSD hosts second Community Conversation meeting for the public

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be hosting a Community Conversation in response to feedback received during the State of the District and inaugural Community Conservation meeting held on March 15, 2023. There will be a panel discussion and tabletop interaction about the diverse needs of students including enrichment and remedial programs.

Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School team attends state conference

A team of educators from the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESMS) recently attended the School Climate Conference 2023 in Temecula, Calif. The conference was focused on promoting positive relationships, school climate and culture, and safety for all students.

The LTESMS team was comprised of teachers from various grade levels, elementary site counselors, and the school's principal.

They used the unique opportunity at the conference to expand their knowledge and come back to share their insights with colleagues, students, and the community.

CTE Family Fun Night for grades K-12 in South Lake Tahoe

Discover, explore, and engage with students, teachers, and local professionals from the four CTE career-focused pathways in Lake Tahoe Unified School District: Allied Health, Media Arts, Hospitality and Tourism, and Environmental Science and Engineering.

LTUSD and LTCC working together to create a college-going community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As a community, South Lake Tahoe has fewer residents than most with a college degree, and administrations with Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) are working to address that.

During their joint board meetings this past week, the trustees heard from leadership the changes they have been implementing to meet their goal of having all local students graduate high school with college credits, and creating a college-going community.

South Tahoe High students compete in statewide National History Day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ten South Tahoe High School students have spent the school year as part of the first National History Day Club at the school, spending many hours outside of the school day researching and creating historical projects on a wide variety of topics. Under the direction of history teacher Daniel Tirre, the students prepared for the National History Day competition held at Sacramento State University last weekend.

"These projects were very high quality and gave our students a chance to show off their academic abilities," said Tirre.

Joint meeting scheduled for Lake Tahoe Unified School District and Lake Tahoe Community College trustees

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Education is holding two special meetings this week, one of which is a joint meeting with the Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees.

On Monday, April 17, the meeting is a closed session with one agenda item, public employee performance evaluation for the superintendent. The meeting starts at 3 p.m. but is not open to the public and not available on Zoom.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The most recent board meeting for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was held on March 23, 2023. The meeting can be viewed on the district's YouTube channel HERE.

During the portion of the meeting with reports by board members, Trustee Larry Reilly hosted on March 15 at South Tahoe High School. He noted that over 150 people attended and thanked participants for their honest dialog.

South Tahoe High's sports medicine students place high in national competition

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School's (STHS) Sports Medicine students attended the National High School Sports Medicine Competition in Los Angeles last weekend and came home with several trophies.

As a team, STHS placed third out of over 40 schools and Rossi Bonev’s individual score placed her fifth out of over 600 students. The Tahoe students also participated in a Sports Med Jeopardy contest, placing third overall!

South Tahoe High seniors commit to LTCC and Simpson College for sports at next level

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College is benefitting from the soccer talents of four South Tahoe High School (STHS) seniors, all committing to playing for the Coyotes in the fall.

During a traditional high school signing ceremony with family and friends watching on Thursday, Itzel Diaz, Jenni Arias, Salvador Arias, and Aiden Morales all committed to LTCC Soccer Coach Jeremy Evans to play for him in the Fall. Aiden was a 1st Team All-League striker, Jenni a 1st Team All-State, and Itzel was Honorable Mention All-State.

Tahoe Valley Performing Arts presents Aristocats KIDS!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Valley Performing Arts presents Aristocats KIDS with over 60 Tahoe Valley Elementary students involved. Shows are Wednesday, March 29 and Thursday, March 30 in the Tahoe Valley Thunderbird Theater. The show starts at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Seats are first come first served unless you have purchased the reserved VIP seats.

World Down Syndrome Day to be celebrated at Sierra House Elementary

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students and staff at Sierra House Elementary School in South Lake Tahoe will be rocking crazy socks on Tuesday in honor of World Down Syndrome Day and their three students who have Down Syndrome.

Tuesday, March 21 is National Down Syndrome Day, and Sierra House Elementary is celebrating its three students with Down Syndrome, David Munguia Reyes, who is in the third grade, and fourth graders Micah Cooley and Dylan Polan.

LTUSD holds inaugural State of the District and Community Conversation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - Almost 150 members of the community attended Wednesday's first of what Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) leaders hope to be the annual State of the District/LCAP Community Conversation.

Attendance was more than double expectations and attendees heard a presentation from LTUSD leadership, participated in interactive tabletop conversations and heard from local leaders.

LTUSD board hears from Washoe Tribe and Sierra House students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its March 9 meeting, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) trustees received a presentation from the Washoe Tribe and Sierra House Elementary students, finances, and new South Tahoe High programs.

During his report, LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler encouraged community members to attend the upcoming State of the District Community Conversation that will be held on March 15, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the South Tahoe High School (STHS) Student Union. Refreshments and snacks will be provided as well as childcare for elementary-age children.

Snow Day for LTUSD and TTUSD students Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have a snow day again on Monday, March 6. This is due to the heavy snow in South Lake Tahoe over the weekend, and more forecasted Sunday night.

The excessive snow is requiring additional time to make sure school sites are safe for students and staff. City and County snow crews will continue working on clearing roads in the community.

All schools in Tahoe Truckee Unified School District are also closed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As many residents are starting to dig out from the past week's snowstorm, some roads are still not cleared. The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has said school buses cannot safely maneuver the streets.

In conversations with both city and county representatives, it is clear that roads will not be widened by tomorrow morning, according to LTUSD. As a result, school will be canceled Thursday, March 2, 2023.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District's community meeting moved due to snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) State of the District/LCAP Community Conversation at South Tahoe High School has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 15 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The meeting has been rescheduled due to the heavy snow received over the last several days, giving the public a chance to dig out and get back on the roads.

LTCC closed Monday due to incoming blizzard

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to heavy snow and blizzard conditions, Lake Tahoe Community College’s campus will be closed on Monday, Feb. 27. Classes will not be held, and all offices and departments will be shut.

Please don’t travel to campus so snow removal operations can continue unimpeded.

Snow Day Monday for Lake Tahoe Unified schools and Douglas County schools at the lake

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District has announced there will be no school on Monday, February 27. Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe will also be closed.

With heavy snow and forecasted blizzard conditions, the District wanted students and staff to remain safe and not on the roads of South Lake Tahoe.

They will continue monitoring the forecast and will provide an update Monday evening about school on Tuesday. The blizzard forecast is expected to end early Wednesday morning.

LTCC launches cross country and long distance track programs with hiring of new coach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. —Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has hired a seasoned community college coach and former student-athlete champion to launch and lead its new collegiate cross-country and long-distance track programs. Matthew Airola, a two-time California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) individual cross country and track & field champion with extensive coaching experience, will start at LTCC in February, with the program’s first competitive season beginning in August 2023.

2023 State of Nevada Mathematics Championship for grades 1-12

The 8th annual State of Nevada Mathematics Championship is open to all Nevada students in grades 1-12, regardless of past math competition experience or participation.

This contest is being hosted by the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno’s campus, and is sponsored by Microsoft. There is an online option for eligible students who are sick or more than a 2-hour drive away.
 
Trophies and medals are awarded to top performers at NNVMath's Annual End of Year Awards Dinner on May 20. Awards will be mailed to those unable to attend the awards dinner.

Applications being accepted for Bijou Community School TWBI TK and Kindergarten lottery

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Are you interested in learning more about Bijou Community School and its Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI)? Commitment forms are now being accepted for TWBI TK and kindergarten classes for the lottery of 66 spots for Kindergarten and 22 spots for TK.

Bijou Community School brings together English and Spanish-speaking students TK through 5th grade in its Two Way Bilingual Immersion program by supporting them to learn to read, write, speak, and listen in two languages.

South Tahoe High School Dance Team takes 1st place at Northern Nevada Cheer and Dance Invitational

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High (STHS) Dance Team took top honors on Saturday at the Northern Nevada Cheer and Dance Invitational held at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno.

The team won first place in the Jazz Dance Category.

Leading the STHS team are coaches Kylee Finnegan, Ashley Smith, Izzy Preston, Bri Alamilla, and choreographer Ashley Smith.

It was a lot of hard work to take the top spot including weeks of 7 a.m. practices, said Coach Kylee.

Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m.

Community STEM Week at Lake Tahoe Community College

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Celebrate HSI STEM week at the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). Radical Innovative Scholars Advancing STEM (RISAS) is the newest program on the LTCC campus after they received a five-year $5 million federal grant to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students pursuing various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) degrees. They join other Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) receiving funds to help Latino/a/x/e and low-income students who are interested in pursuing education and careers in STEM.

Two-hour delay start to Lake Tahoe Unified Schools on Tuesday, 90-minute delay for Douglas

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be on a two-hour delayed start to school on Tuesday, December 13. Many families and staff have been without power for an extended period of time, and many are still shoveling snow to get out of their homes.

As a result of this storm, many are still dealing with the impacts of the snow, including downed trees and damage. LTUSD schools are experiencing similar impacts and could use the additional time to prepare for students.

UNR receives grant to train aspiring special education leaders

To help counter a decline in special education teachers and leaders in recent years, professors in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Education & Human Development will use a U.S. Department of Education grant to train aspiring special education leaders.

Volunteers clear space at South Tahoe High for new quad with donated benches and tables

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Seventy volunteers were at South Tahoe High on Sunday, working hard to clear up the quad area in the center of campus for the upcoming table and bench project.

The South Tahoe Vikings Booster Club is spearheading the project and has been finding sponsors for the benches and tables, and coordinating donations.

Ed Cook's Tree Service donated the cut logs that now rim the quad area and brought along a Bobcat to move the logs, dirt, and boulder donated by Goodrich Construction.

South Lake Tahoe 6th graders spend day planting trees, learning about watershed and fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Tahoe Middle School 6th grade students spent the day with environmental educators and learned about watershed health as they helped to replant in Caldor Fire burn scar.

Members from the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC) put on their “most popular” field trip for the students at Echo Lakes Sno-Park on October 21.

STEEC is a collaborative network of over 25 local agencies and non-profits that work together to bring environmental programs to the South Lake Tahoe schools. They run at least one field trip per grade per year.

Sierra House Elementary walk-a-thon raises money for school activities

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In the annual South Lake Tahoe tradition, local elementary schools are getting their walk-a-thons in before the first snow falls.

This was the case Friday on the field at Sierra House Elementary. Hundreds of students donning their class t-shirts ran and/or walked the course set up on the field along Pioneer Trail.

Teachers, parents, siblings all joined in with Principal Karen Holmes, as did members from the Lake Tahoe Lakers ice hockey team of the United States Premier Hockey League.

South Tahoe High School Grad Night '23 seeks volunteers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Calling all LTUSD parents, guardians, and community members - it is time to start planning for another amazing Grad Night. Last year's event was a great success and they are looking forward to making this year's event a night to remember for our graduates.

The 2023 Grad Night will be held on Friday, June 16.

National School Bus Safety Week, October 17- 21

School bus safety is a two-way street - a responsibility shared by professional school bus drivers and every motorist on California's roadways. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is bringing awareness to the role we all play in ensuring students throughout the state travel safely to and from school as part of National School Bus Safety Week, October 17- 21.

New benches and tables up for sponsorship in South Tahoe High School quad

South Tahoe Vikings Booster Club is starting 2022-23 off with a bang and they are inviting the South Lake Tahoe community to join in the fun. This year, Boosters is coordinating the rejuvenation of the South Tahoe High School (STHS) QUAD - the center of campus - for the students to have a great outdoor space to hang out in!

After a general cleanup, Boosters will be adding boulders, logs, native vegetation (in planter boxes- with the help of the STHS Garden Club), and 40 different outdoor tables and benches for students and staff to congregate at. And they are looking for support!

Tahoe history class to start Sept. 22 at Lake Tahoe Community College

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe historian Dr. David Borges is teaching his popular Tahoe History workshop once again this quarter at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Through the school's Connect program, both budding history buffs and long-time locals will learn all about the history of the Lake Tahoe area. The 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. workshop is held on Tuesdays from Sept. 22 - Nov. 10 except for Oct. 13 and 20.

South Tahoe High School student pride displays have safety benefit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High School has undergone a rebranding, but not in a typical way. All around the campus are displays of the school's Viking mascot to help increase student pride, and bring a sense of community and belonging to the school while also promoting and displaying the "Viking Graduate Profile."

New superintendent for Alpine County Unified School District

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Ken Burkhart has been hired as the new superintendent of schools for Alpine County and the new principal of Bear Valley Elementary School.

Burkhart arrives in Alpine County with many years of experience working in small school districts and rural communities. He comes from Pope Valley in Napa County where he served as the superintendent, principal, and teacher at Pope Valley Elementary for the past 7.5 years. Prior to that, he held the same role in the town of Flournoy in Tehama County.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s forestry & fire programs receive funding for scholarships, equipment

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA—Lake Tahoe Community College’s (LTCC) new Forestry program will launch this Fall quarter with generous scholarships in place for participating students, thanks to a grant from the Tahoe Fund. The Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at LTCC is also receiving grant funding from the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation for required gear and equipment purchases, allowing even more students to be able to participate in the program.

Almost 250 students celebrated during 47th graduation ceremony at Lake Tahoe Community College

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The forty-seventh annual Lake Tahoe Community College graduation ceremony was held Friday evening, June 24, on LTCC’s synthetic turf soccer field. The focus of this year’s ceremony was celebrating the grit and determination demonstrated by this graduating class to reach this day.

Several speakers touched on this idea, honoring the nearly 250 degree and certificate earners at LTCC who rose above the uncertainty and ambiguity of recent years to meet their educational and personal goals.

LTCC hires new Vice President of Academic Affairs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has hired an experienced, longtime California Community College administrator and faculty member as its new Vice President of Academic Affairs. Dr.Raymond Gamba joins LTCC’s leadership team in late June, stepping in as outgoing VP, Dr. Michelle Risdon, retires.

Sugar Bowl Academy graduates 17 student-athletes

Excitement was in the air as Sugar Bowl Academy (SBA) graduated seventeen seniors on Saturday, June 11, at the Mount Judah Lodge.

In keeping with Sugar Bowl Academy tradition, underclassmen, classmates, and alumni individually introduced graduating seniors before awarding them their diplomas. The speeches demonstrated the seniors' important leadership role in the SBA community and highlighted aspects of each graduate's personality and character.

The Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School is holding an outdoor talent show on Tuesday, June 7 at 5 p.m. Not only will there be great talent on the stage, but also a fruit cart, Crepes and Craft food truck, and face painting stations.

The evening will be filled with dancers, singers, comedians, musicians, and performers.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket and join them on the school's field.
