SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a head-on traffic collision call at 8:32 a.m. Saturday on Pioneer Trail near the intersection of Woodbine Road. The driver of a GMC Sierra heading eastbound fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into the westbound lanes, colliding with a Lexus SUV.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and the JPA ambulances also responded.
The driver of the GMC was the sole occupant of that vehicle, while the Lexus had eight people inside. The driver was transported by ambulance with minor cuts and abrasions, and five people from the Lexus were transported, also with non-life-threatening injuries.
SLTPD Sgt. Traci Trapini said neither drugs nor alcohol were involved, and they have ruled out criminal charges.
The speed limit on that stretch of Pioneer Trail is 35 mph and there were no signs of speeding, said Trapini.
