SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – This is the season for the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Club – a season of fundraising and celebrating women. On March 4, 1977, Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra, or better known as SITS, was chartered and became a club within the Sierra Nevada Region of the international club (Soroptimist International was formed in Oakland, Calif., in 1921 and now spans 118 countries).

International Women’s Day was on March 8, and while it is a coincidence that SITS celebrated its 48th anniversary just a few days before, the club also celebrates the social, economic, and cultural achievements of women.

SITS supports women and youth in the community through its financial and hands-on support of clubs and programs, scholarships, awards, and recognition.

To accomplish what they do – and giving out about $50,000 per year – they must fundraise, and they are currently planning their three major events to raise the money needed to do all that they do to support the community.

The club’s third annual Mad Hatter Tea Party will be held on May 18 at Valhalla, but tickets sold out for the popular event in just six days. While preparations for that event are underway, there are still a few other ways to support the club of dynamic women.

Sponsor the Club and Events

Since the pandemic, SITS has found different ways for the community to support its endeavors. They once held an annual 500-person Elegant Evening and now hold the Mad Hatter, Online Auction, Raffle, and have sponsorships available instead. Businesses and individuals can sponsor the club annually and, in return, get names and logos on their website, posters at events, and mentions publicly. Event sponsors are honored at the event along with publicity. For more on this opportunity, visit https://e.givesmart.com/events/ES0/

To learn more about the vibrant club, meetings are held weekly (normally at the Lisa Maloff Center but are changed from time to time), and the public can sign up for their weekly newsletter. The club will be sponsoring Kid Zone at Earth Day on April 19, and information on the club will be available at their booth. Members are also in town working with students in their life-skills and sewing classes, honoring Mt. Tallac students of the month, holding middle school Challenge Day essay and art contests, volunteering at events and Bread & Broth, and more.
