SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The 38th annual Kiwanis South Shore Spelling Bee was held on April 30 at the STAOR Building. The competition consisted of five rounds, with each division spelling five words per round. Elementary school teams featured five students and one alternate. Following this event, teams had the opportunity to advance to the county spelling bee on the western slope on May 7.
The day began with the 5th Grade Division, where students tackled challenging words such as “questionnaire,” “paunch,” and “kernel.” In this division, Bijou Elementary took 1st place, Meyers Elementary took 2nd place, and Sierra House took 3rd place.
In Division 1 (1st and 2nd graders), the first-place team missed only one word throughout the competition. Meyers Elementary secured 1st place, followed closely by Sierra House in 2nd place.
Division 3-4 (3rd and 4th graders) saw a very intense competition with only a six-point spread across all four teams. Meyers Elementary took 1st place with 113 points, Bijou Elementary took 2nd place with 110 points, and Tahoe Valley took 3rd place with 108 points. Sierra House followed closely with 107 points.
The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe thanks everyone involved in making this event a success, especially the dedicated coaches, teachers, and administrators. Next year, we hope to see all schools participate in every division, including Zephyr Cove Elementary.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the South Tahoe Association of Realtors for hosting this event.
