LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – The Zephyr Cove Elementary School 4th Grade, aka the Mighty Cub Plant Pros (MCPP), is having a plant sale featuring strawberry baskets, petunia baskets, and assorted herbs. Buy online and pick up on May 21 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the ZCES Grow Domes. Purchases will support their 5th-grade overnight field trip next year. They worked hard on these plants, and each basket has the name of the student planter! The students said the public can shop online at https://www.zcesparentsclub.org/.
As part of the Zephyr Cove Elementary School (ZCES) gardening program, the 4th grade class created a plant business, The Mighty Cub Plant Pros! Over the past 16 weeks, the students have created a business plan, worked on their revenue/expenses and projected profit, presented and asked for a loan for their start-up fees from the ZCES Parents Club, created their own business name and logo, and have had discovery zoom meetings with the plant vendors for the strawberries and petunias. They have learned how to plant and grow bare-root strawberry plants, planted petunias, and grew all the herbs from seed in hydroponic units in their classroom, before transplanting them into the pots. It has been an incredible experience in gardening and entrepreneurship.
Items available for purchase include 10” strawberry hanging baskets and 10” petunia hanging baskets for $20/each, along with 6” pots of various herbs, including basil, thyme, parsley, mint, and chives for $10/each.
