5/29/17 10:45 p.m. update: All of the evacuated residents are now back home after Southwest Gas crews were able to stop the leak and repair the broken main line. At this time those crews are going into each apartment and relighting pilot lights.

According to SLTFR Battalion Chief Jim Drennan the cause of the broken line is unknown. The main is located alongside the apartment’s parking lot but the break occurred underground.

An apartment building at the corner of Pioneer Trail and Aspenwald Road in South Lake Tahoe has been evacuated after the main gas line into the building was fractured.

As of 9:40 p.m. Monday night, South Lake Tahoe Police officers had moved the residents of the 15 unit complex to a safe spot about a block away from their homes on Aspen Avenue.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was able to secure the gas feed into the building according to SLTFR Battalion Chief Jim Drennan. He said Southwest Gas had just arrived and are looking at the two-inch break in the gas line.

This is a developing story.
