Cycling in South Lake Tahoe was the focus of the second Annual Cycle Celebration on Saturday. Kids both young and old were at the Heavenly Village to participate in a Bike Parade, Bike Rodeo, Bike Tune-Up station and informational booths.
The celebration wrapped up the two-week long Tahoe Bike Challenge where hundreds of people got out of their cars and biked to school, work and for play.
During Saturday’s activities, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition honored the Town of Truckee and Karen & Pete Fink for their contributions to cycling in the region.
The Town of Truckee was recognized because of Measure R which was passed by 78% of their voters. $10 million will be raised over the next ten years by increasing the sales tax in Truckee by .25%. All money will go to improving cycling in the community. The Mayor, City Manager and Trails Foundation members were on hand to accept the award.
Karen and Pete Fink were honored for their dedication to the South Lake Tahoe cycling community and “for being all around good biking people.” Pete is a member of TAMBA (Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association), was on the Measure R Advisory Committee, runs the BMX Club at Bijou Elementary as well as being a member of the SLT Parks & Recreation Commission. Karen, who works at TRPA, bikes to work almost every day of the year from Sierra Tract to Kingsbury Grade. She was also a founding member of the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition.
“There is a lot happening in the Tahoe Basin,” said Pete Fink. “This is the right direction for our community.”
During the Bike Challenge, students and staff of Lake Tahoe Unified School District logged the most miles with 2088.5, followed by Lake Tahoe Community College with 1545.73 and the City of South Lake Tahoe’s 1511.83 miles. Barton Health had the most participants with 1,000 and Tahoe Mountain Lab led the category of most team trips with 296.
