LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Following a busy Fourth of July in South Lake Tahoe, July 9 marks the start of the 36th annual American Century Championship golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe. From the airport to Edgewood itself, excitement for the event is marked by signs advertising the tournament around town and the presence of private planes and heightened security.

South Tahoe Now intern Sabrina Philip started at the Lake Tahoe Airport on Tuesday, July 8, to see what is happening on the South Shore in anticipation of the tournament.

At the airport at 3:30 p.m., several private jets could be seen parked along the runway with cars that appeared to be picking up passengers. It was hard to tell exactly who was coming from the airplanes, but still enjoyable to watch. The newly opened Flight Deck Grill & Golf Club was busy with those wanting to not only eat at the restaurant or have a cocktail, but also see the tarmac activity.

Driving to Edgewood Tahoe, the host of the tournament, signage around the entrance were announcing the tournament tomorrow. Besides signs showing closures to certain entrances, there were construction traffic message boards warning drivers of a “special event ahead,” suggesting precaution when driving around Edgewood. White tents could also be seen on the course from the outside of the resort, and signs from American Century were posted alongside the outside of the tournament area.

Activity around the course has been high with vendors and caterers preparing for the crowds. Hundreds of volunteers are ready to staff the local nonprofit food tents, and cover the course as marshals, scorers, and fill many other positions.
