SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Earlier this month, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) gave Liberty the green light to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for bundled and unbundled energy supply and energy management services for its customers.

Electrical services supplied to homes on the California side of Lake Tahoe will not change when NV Energy, the current provider, stops sending power over the state line. Where that electricity is sourced will change.

Beginning in 2028, NV Energy will no longer serve as Liberty’s wholesale energy supplier. To prepare for this transition, Liberty has begun the competitive process to secure new supplemental energy supply arrangements focused on sustainability, affordability, and reliability. NV Energy will remain the transmission provider and neighbor, and Liberty will continue to use the existing transmission system to deliver electricity to its service territory. How that electricity is sourced is what will change.

Liberty generates a portion of the electricity sent to customers through 60-
megawatts of solar systems it owns. That will continue, with the new source replacing the portion they get from NV Energy.

Timeline:

  • July 2026: CPUC approval granted to begin this search
  • A formal competitive bidding process opens in Summer 2026
  • The process allows Liberty to find more diverse and affordable energy sources while maintaining its high standards for reliability. They said they will focus on sustainable and affordable solutions.
  • CPUC Approval: Liberty will file a request, revealing the results of the formal bidding process and their preferred selection(s), likely in Winter 2026/2027.
  • New Suppliers: Once approved by the CPUC, Liberty will enter into new supplemental power agreements for energy supply needs in Spring/Summer 2027.
  • The Transition: The official transition is expected to take place beginning in 2028, once NV Energy’s Greenlink project goes into service and the transmission capacity rights become available to enable this transition to the energy market. In the most recent public posting, NV Energy expects this to occur by December 31, 2027.
