SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Save Mart Companies will be moving into the old Rite-Aid space on Al Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe. Plans for a new store have been approved, according to Zach Thomas, the City’s Director of Development Services.

A spokesperson for Save Mart’s corporate headquarters said they didn’t have any information to provide at this time about the company’s plans for South Lake Tahoe. They are the parent company of Save Mart, Food Maxx, Lucky, Chuck’s, and Roth’s grocery stores and The Tipping Point, an in-store casual dining counter service restaurant now featured in some Save Mart locations.

Rite-Aid closed its South Lake Tahoe location on December 10, 2023, and the store has been vacant since then. The store is 38,000 square feet and was built in 1972.

The tenant in the adjacent space is Ross Dress for Less. At one time, that side was a Lucky, then later rebranded as Albertson’s.

In other South Lake Tahoe building department news, Thomas said plans for the current Jack-in-the-Box were submitted by Starbucks for a drive-thru coffee location, but Starbucks wanted to include some design revisions, and the City is waiting for those new plans to be submitted.

The adjacent property, the former Sunray Motel, has been demolished, and the site has been stabilized. Thomas said there are no plans submitted on the property. In South Tahoe Now’s last conversation with the owner, they were just immediately concerned with removing the old motel and fixing the site.
