If you’ve noticed more law enforcement on the east side of Spooner Summit/US0 with commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) pulled over, it has all been part of a response to a recent increase in crashes. The the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol (NHP) Division’s Commercial Enforcement Section has increased inspection and enforcement efforts in the affected area of US50 and US395.
Over the past two weeks, enforcement units operating in this focused area have:
- Conducted 102 roadside inspections
- Documented 286 violations
- Placed 45 drivers out of service
- Placed 33 commercial motor vehicles Out-of-Service
Note: Out-of-Service violations must be corrected before a driver or vehicle can resume operations.
Troopers identified violations involving driver documentation, vehicle equipment and mechanical condition, motor carrier operating authority, and drivers’ daily logbooks.
During this period, inspectors did not observe any commercial vehicles with obvious or severe brake defects.
To further support commercial motor vehicle safety on steep grades, inspectors deployed a portable message board east of the US 50/US 28 junction displaying:
“Steep grade ahead. CMV check brakes.”
Inspectors also implemented pop-up safety alerts through drivers’ electronic logging devices (ELDs). As commercial drivers approach the US 50/US 28 junction, they receive the message: “Runaway Truck Ramp 1 mile ahead,” before each ramp.
Through a combination of enforcement and education, NHP is working to reduce crashes, improve the safety of commercial motor vehicle drivers, and enhance the safety of all motorists traveling Nevada’s highways.
