EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – A 21-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe died Friday morning after his vehicle went 70 feet over an embankment on US50 near the 41-mile marker east of Strawberry by Twin Bridges.
At 4:09 a.m., the victim’s iPhone sent out a crash alert to authorities. The California Highway Patrol, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Valley Fire, and CalFire all responded to the area.
According to initial reports, the first responders could not find a crash site based on phone coordinates. They searched the area in the dark, then, at daylight, were able to find the victim and his vehicle 70 feet down an embankment.
