SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of the recent installation of four new crosswalks with Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHB) along U.S. Highway 50 (US 50) in South Lake Tahoe.
The new PHBs are part of the $36 million South Lake Tahoe Safety Project. The contractor for this project is St. Francis Electric of San Leandro.
The project includes:
- Crosswalks with PHBs at the following locations:
o South Tahoe Middle School/Fire Station
o Grocery Outlet between Truckee Drive and River Drive
o Taco Bell between Carson Avenue/Rubicon Trail and Blue Lake Avenue
o Whole Foods Market between Herbert Avenue and Ski Run Boulevard
- New stoplights and crosswalks at Johnson Boulevard and US 50
- New green bike lanes along both directions of US 50 between Pioneer Trail (north) and the “Tahoe Y” junction with State Route 89 (SR 89)
- An upgraded signal vehicle detection system at the “Tahoe Y” SR 89/US 50 junction
- Decorative lighting along both directions of US 50
The new PHB features a distinctive light-changing pattern for motorists. The diagram below illustrates the light pattern sequence when a pedestrian/cyclist presses the button to activate the PHB.
These upgrades will enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists along the busy US 50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard corridor. Motorists traveling along US 50 should be aware of the new crosswalks and PHBs.
