STATELINE, Nev. – Ever watched curling during the Winter Olympics and wondered if you could try it yourself? Lake Tahoe Epic Curling Club is inviting the community to get on the ice during its upcoming three-part Curling Lessons series this September.
The beginner-friendly series will be held Thursdays, September 10, 17, and 24, from 6–8 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Epic Curling Club, 128 Market Street #1A in Stateline. The cost is $100 per person for all three sessions, and participants must be at least 12 years old.
No previous curling experience is necessary.
Over the three sessions, experienced Lake Tahoe Epic curlers will introduce participants to the fundamentals of the Olympic sport, including curling terminology, delivering a stone, sweeping, scoring, strategy and the rules needed to play a game.
“Curling is easy to try, and it’s a lot more fun than people expect,” said Edie Hazard, who competed for Great Britain at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, and is a 2002 Women’s World Curling Champion and Lake Tahoe Epic Curling representative. “You’ll learn how to slide, sweep and throw a stone, then put it all together in a real game. Our lessons are relaxed, welcoming and a great way to try something new, meet people and have fun on the ice.”
The September series can serve as an introduction for anyone considering joining the club, or simply as an opportunity to learn more about a sport that attracts worldwide attention every four years during the Winter Olympics.
Curling has been played in the South Lake Tahoe area since 2013. Lake Tahoe Epic Curling originally operated out of the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena before opening its dedicated curling facility in Stateline in 2019. Today, the member-managed nonprofit operates two sheets of dedicated curling ice year-round and offers leagues, drop-in play, youth programs, bonspiels, private events, and opportunities for both new and experienced curlers.
The club has also been recognized locally as Best Winter Activity and Second Best Summer Activity.
“Curling brings people together,” Hazard said. “You don’t need to be an athlete or know anything about the sport to get started. Come give it a try, have a few laughs and see what you can do.”
