SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Wind Advisory and Lake Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe Basin, and a High Wind Watch and Fire Weather Watch for Reno and the Carson Valley.
For Lake Tahoe:
Lake Wind Advisory for Friday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Expect southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 to 35 mph and wave heights of 1 to 3 feet for Lake Tahoe.
Wind Advisory for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Sunday. Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 45 mph below 7000 feet and ridgetop winds gusting up to 85 mph.
Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down, and a few power outages may result. Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft. Blowing dust may reduce visibility.
NWS Reno said winds will increase Saturday through the morning and afternoon hours, with the strongest winds expected Saturday evening.
For the Carson City and the Carson Valley areas:
Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe, Western Lyon, and Far Southern Lassen Counties, Fire Weather Zone 421: Southern Sierra Front, including Alpine, Northern Mono, Southern Lyon, and Western Mineral Counties.
This watch will last from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday. Southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Wind-prone locations along US-395 may see gusts of 55 to 65 mph. With humidity as low as 13 percent and strong winds, fire could rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain it.
The High Wind Watch will last until 2 a.m. Sunday. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Wind-prone areas along I-580, US-395, and the eastern slopes of the Carson Range may gust up to 60 to 70 mph.
