Just a little history and an invitation
As we celebrate our country’s 250th birthday, we are reflecting on American Legion Post 795. Our Post started back in 1948 when Stella Van Dyke Johnson generously donated the land to our Post.

Harvey West and family donated the lumber and materials for the building. In recent years, the Johnson family has generously donated funds for landscaping and maintenance.

This building was not only a gathering place for Veterans, but was a place for community social events. It has also been a library and a school. People came to dances from all around the Tahoe basin before the casinos became big resorts. In the heavy winter of 1968-69, a high school dance was scheduled. While the band was setting up their equipment for the dance, the roof collapsed and blew everyone out, and it has never been rebuilt. Thankfully, no one was killed or injured.

Three years ago our roof needed to be replaced. We were so humbled and grateful for all the support and funding we received from so many members of this community and organizations who gave to help replace the roof.

We are attempting to raise enough funds to sustain us through the winter and we have plans to renovate the kitchen in order to prepare nutritious meals for our Veterans who make up approximately eight percent of the population of El Dorado County.

We are inviting all community members, Veterans, their families, and everyone to come and share your stories of Tahoe and this building. If you have pictures that you can share, please bring them.

We are asking those Veterans who work during the week and the Veterans attending Lake Tahoe Community College to please come.

Please attend our “ALL AMERICAN Bar-B-Q” on Saturday, September 26, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. As this is a fundraiser, we are asking $20 for a hamburger or
cheeseburger meal, which includes baked beans, potato salad, chips, and a drink. Veterans with proof of service receive a 25% discount ($5 off), which is $15 per meal.
