LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – The Coast Guard rescued a kayaker after their kayak overturned approximately four miles west of Glenbrook, Nevada, on Saturday morning.
At 8:22 a.m. on September 26, Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe received a 911 emergency relay from another kayaker in the group and launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small (RB-S) boat crew to respond.
Station members arrived on scene and brought the person in distress aboard the RB-S. The kayaker displayed symptoms of hypothermia and was transported to Cave Rock for further evaluation by awaiting emergency medical services personnel.
The two remaining kayakers in the group confirmed they did not need assistance. All three were wearing lifejackets.
“This case highlights the importance of wearing a life jacket as doing so buys you time until first responders can arrive on scene,” said BMC Kyle Floyd, Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe officer in charge. “In 2024 alone, 87 percent of drowning victims in fatal recreational boating accidents were not wearing a life jacket.”
