INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – Cold temps and Tahoe’s highest base area elevation have given Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe an edge again this year, making it the first resort in Tahoe, and among the first in the country, to fire up its snowmaking system ahead of the 26/27 season.
Targeting a Nov. 6 opening, weather and conditions permitting, the resort’s marketing director, Mike Pierce, says, “It’s always exciting to see the first taste of winter, and as an added bonus, to be able to crank out snowmaking in force over the next couple of days. We plan to make as much snow as possible with this latest cold snap and then be ready for all future opportunities to crank up the system.”
The resort’s location has significant advantages when it comes to making early season snow thanks to Tahoe’s highest base elevation at 8,260′, mostly north and east facing slopes, and a robust snowmaking system that can crank out snow when conditions permit (below freezing temperatures coupled with low humidity, ideally for periods greater than four hours).
To open, the resort intends to offer a high-quality skiing and riding experience from day one. This means Mt. Rose will open when at least one of its signature intermediate trails achieves an average snow depth of 10-14″, providing over 1,000 vertical feet or groomed skiing and snowboarding. Efforts are currently focused on opening the Lakeview lift serving terrain in the Kit Carson Bowl, with additional trails and lifts to open as conditions permit.
