Hello South Shore Art Lovin’ Friends! Michelle Gomez here from Tahoe Art League.
This Thursday, October 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., is our monthly Third Thursday Member Mingle at the Tahoe Art League Gallery. You do not have to be a Member to attend; we welcome the public to all of our events! We’re very excited to have Piper Monika Johnson as our guest speaker – you can call her Piper J. She owns the gorgeous fine art Piper J Gallery in Truckee, and recently opened Ridgeline Gallery in June, also in Truckee.
While I have not met her in person, our phone conversation today was delightful. I had been told that she was super nice and approachable, so I’m really looking forward to putting a face to the voice. Her passion is plein air painting with oils; her technique uses the palette knife to slather on thick layers of sumptuous colors. It turns out, she’s been to the Tahoe Art League to demonstrate her talented style – way back in 2014. But this visit will highlight her transition from Artist to Gallerist.
In chatting with her today, she told me that she’s best at talking up other artists and their works, not so much her own. As I get to know more artist friends, and that goes for my musician and actor friends, I find that I need to be their voice to brag about them, extol their talents, and write stories about them! Her Gallery is a busy space, offering classes like the upcoming Watercolor on Aquabord class by well-known artist Lisa Jefferson. Piper also started Truckee Art Walk, the event takes place on the first Saturday of the month. This past October 4, there were 16 merchants participating, with painters, sculptors, jewelers, photographers, etc, all showcasing their creations in cool spots like Alibi Ale Works and Tahoe Oil & Spice. The next Art Walk is on November 1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Worth the drive to lovely historic Truckee for sure!

And mark your calendars for Tahoe Art League’s Fundraiser Bowl for the Arts on Saturday, November 15th 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Tahoe Bowl. The event will raise funds to support our FREE art classes for the community, scholarships for High School and LTCC students, murals around town, and so much more.
