SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – From the director of Valhalla’s sold-out production of Men on Boats comes a fiercely funny and thought-provoking comedy about four extraordinary women during the French Revolution.
Revolution, laughter, and a little bit of chaos are coming to the Boathouse Theatre next week as Valhalla Tahoe presents The Revolutionists, a bold and witty comedy by acclaimed playwright Lauren Gunderson. Opening Thursday, October 22, and running through November 1, the production promises an evening of sharp humor, unexpected friendship, and powerful storytelling in one of Lake Tahoe’s most unique
theatrical settings.
Set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror, The Revolutionists imagines an unlikely gathering of four extraordinary women: playwright and political activist Olympe de Gouges, determined assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen Marie Antoinette, and Haitian revolutionary Marianne Angelle. As the world around them descends into chaos, these women navigate questions of courage, identity, friendship, and what it means to leave a lasting mark on history.
Blending sharp contemporary humor with poignant moments, the play offers a fresh and often hilarious perspective on a turbulent chapter of history. Beneath the laughter lies a moving exploration of women’s voices, the power of storytelling, and the courage it takes to stand up for what matters.
The production is directed by Valhalla Tahoe Executive Director Meg Peart, whose previous directing credits at the Boathouse Theatre include Silent Sky and the sold-out production of Men on Boats. Known for bringing compelling stories and dynamic ensemble performances to the Valhalla stage, Peart returns to the director’s chair with another production that blends humor, history, and powerful female characters.
“The Revolutionists is one of those rare plays that can make you laugh out loud one moment and leave you deeply moved the next,” said Peart. “These four women are funny, complicated, courageous, and wonderfully human. Beneath all the humor is a beautiful story about friendship, finding your voice, and the impact we can have on the world around us.”
The production features a talented cast of local performers:
- Stephanie Grigsby as Olympe de Gouges
- Courtney Cobble as Marianne Angelle
- Ginger Nicolay Davis as Marie Antoinette
- Joanie San Agustin as Charlotte Corday
Known for her clever dialogue and compelling female characters, playwright Lauren Gunderson brings a modern sensibility to historical storytelling. The Revolutionists celebrates the strength and complexity of women whose stories deserve to be told, while reminding audiences that even in the darkest moments, there is room for laughter, connection, and hope.
The intimate Boathouse Theatre, located within the historic Heller Estate on the shores of Lake Tahoe, provides a distinctive setting for this fast-paced and emotionally engaging production.
