I respect that well intentioned parties may have a different view on the matter before the City Council on October 21, 2025. They are intitled to their view.
In addition to the staff report on the agenda, I support the resolution in opposition for the following reason as I will state at the meeting:
“#12. Resolution Opposing Proposition 50
What is not made clear is that the proposition is not just a state only issue. It directly affects the city’s existing congressional district that was drawn by the independent commission and replaces it with a partisan district that is gerrymandered to include Sacramento. The Proposition 50 State ballot issue is a local issue because it directly affects voters rights in our existing district. It is a partisan attack on good governance in California that voters did not want to occur. We are not responsible for what is done in Texas and other states. Our job, in my view, as locally elected officials is to support the current nonpartisan districting commission to ensure the voting rights of our city voters are not violated by a presumptuous legislative proposal…Proposition 50.
