Nothing says fall quite like finding crisp, local apples in a Market Bag from Lake Tahoe Markets. Autumn is the perfect season to bring this versatile fruit into the kitchen. Apples add natural sweetness, texture, and flavor to both savory and sweet dishes, making them one of fall’s most useful ingredients.

For breakfast, diced apples can be stirred into oatmeal, yogurt, or pancakes for a seasonal touch. At lunch and dinner, sliced apples pair beautifully with roasted squash, leafy greens, pork, chicken, and sharp cheeses. Their balance of sweetness and acidity adds brightness to hearty autumn meals.

Of course, apples truly shine in baked goods. Classic favorites like apple pie, crisp, cobbler, and muffins fill the home with the comforting aroma of cinnamon and spice. They can also be roasted whole, cooked into applesauce, or simmered into chutneys that complement holiday dishes.

Apples offer endless possibilities throughout the fall season. Nutritious, affordable, and delicious, they are a simple way to celebrate the flavors of autumn in every meal.

Apple Crisp

This apple crisp is the best fall dessert ever!  Fresh sliced apples are topped with a buttery cinnamon oat topping that tastes divine with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

5 cups fresh apples, sliced
½ cup granulated sugar
½ tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Topping:
½ cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup old-fashioned oats
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
¼ tsp. salt
½ tsp. cinnamon
¼ cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease a deep dish pie plate or large baking dish with butter or cooking spray and set aside.  Combine the sliced apples with the sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract in a large bowl and mix until all of the apples are evenly coated. Pour into the prepared baking dish.

In a separate medium-size bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Pour in the melted butter and stir until well coated and crumbly. Sprinkle the crumb mixture evenly over the top of the apples.  Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes until the fruit is soft and the topping is golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream on top. Enjoy!
