Mark Teruya booking photo from Carson City Sheriff

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – The manager of a Carson City hot tub store is suspected of embezzling $116,000 from the business. Mark Kana Teruya, 54, was arrested on October 29, 2026, near Topsy Lane in Douglas County on a warrant from the Carson City Justice Court.

According to court documents, Teruya allegedly sold two hot tubs and two hot tub covers to three customers at the store, but instead of depositing the payments into the business account, he converted them into deposits to his personal account. Those three deposits were $80,000 and two at $18,000 each.

The case had been under investigation for over a year. The owner of the business had asked the suspect for the business banking login information in 2025. Teruya had worked for the company for approximately 10 years.

There appears to be no wrongdoing at another store location at Lake Tahoe, according to Douglas County Undersheriff Ron Elges.

The $80,000 transaction allegedly took place in April 2024, and the other two between October 2021 and April 2022. Elges said a “global resolution” was done with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. “The same victim had thefts in their jurisdiction as well and we wrote reports on their system,” said Elges.

It is unclear at this time if any further charges will be brought against the suspect. He had been booked into the Carson City Jail on a $25,000 bail hold, but as of November 5, he does not appear on their incarceration list.
