SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – How often does South Lake Tahoe experience a week in the high-50s, into the 60s in the middle of December? Answer: Rarely. With an average high of 44.5 degrees, highs sometimes dip into the 50s, with a rare 60. The forecast of 64 on Wednesday will match the previous record, if it holds. Thursday’s forecast high of 62 would break the record of 59.

While an atmospheric river aims at the Pacific Northwest, a high-pressure bubble continues to hang out over the west. Besides sunny days, winds will stay light (<20 mph) through all of this week.

There are still signs that the storm door may be opening back up
again after next weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Ensembles are showing that somewhere around the 15th-17th, the first wave will open the door. But, since it’s still far out, it is a “wait and see” scenario for Lake Tahoe.
