
Closed highways and chain controls are hampering travel on Lake Tahoe area roads as the throngs of weekend skiers attempt to make their way home.
As of 9:45 a.m. Sunday, I-80 remains closed in both directions from Colfax to the Nevada state line due to hazardous driving condition. It has been closed since Saturday evening when the recent storm hit the region.
Highway 50 over Echo Summit is very slow moving due to heavy snow, and there are reports in at this hour of three separate accidents over the summit, backing up traffic. Two more accidents between the Y in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers. Chains are required on all vehicles except those 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels from Meyers to 4 miles east of Placerville.
SR-88 is cloed over the Carson Spur and Carson Pass – 3.5 miles east of Silver Lake to Kirkwood, and 2 miles east of Kirkwood to 5 miles west of Picketts Junction. Chains are required on all vehicles except those 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels from Dew Drop to 3.5 miles west of Woodfords.
SR-89 is closed at Emerald Bay. Chains or snow tires from Emerald Bay to Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe to Emerald Bay. Chains are required on all vehicles except those 4WD with snowtires on all 4 wheels from Meyers to Picketts Junction over Luther Pass.
Highway 50 over Spooner Summit requires chains or snowtires from Stateline to Carson City.
SR-207 Kingsbury Grade is chains or snowtires from Stateline to the Carson Valley.
