Knight Monsters agree to terms with rookie defenseman Brandon Tabakin

Tabakin, 24, joins the Knight Monsters after beginning his professional career with the Newfoundland Growlers this past March, logging an assist in six appearances. Before joining the Growlers, Tabakin concluded his senior season at Arizona State University where he collected ten points (2g, 8a) in 36 games played.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) along with partners at Heavenly Mountain Resort, invites the public to Hike with a Ranger beginning Friday, July 26, 2024. Hikes take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The guided hikes last approximately one hour and will continue every weekend through September 29, weather permitting.

Charges upgraded to murder after South Lake Tahoe shooting victim dies

Christopher A. Guzman, 28, was arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) as a suspect after the shooting in the 2000 block of Eloise Avenue.

Liquidation company says Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe tactics leading them to bankruptcy

Luxury 4 Less owner Tracy Hunt said she was hired to liquidate the furniture in the rooms that were being renovated, along with 125 slot machines. Hunt said that, after working with Golden Nugget management for over three weeks, she was sent an approval letter to pick up the furniture plus a Nevada Gaming Board approval letter to remove the slot machines.
Health Advisory still in effect for some North Lake Tahoe beaches
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/22/2024 - 10:03pmNORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Carnelian Bay West Beach and Patton Landing Beach will both remain closed after a sewer line break near Carnelian Bay dumped untreated sewage into Lake Tahoe on Thursday, July 18.
A private contractor struck the North Tahoe Public Utility District’s (NTPUD) main sewer export pipeline, resulting in 125,000 gallons of untreated sewage being discharged, 85,000 of those gallons ending up in the lake.
Lightning-caused fires in Plumas National Forest, evacuations underway
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/22/2024 - 8:17pmPLUMAS COUNTY, Calif. - Four fires started Monday afternoon after a thunderstorm passed through eastern Plumas County around 2 p.m. The four fires were all dry lightning strikes and were outside of the rain core of the storm.
The Mill, Mill 2, and Mill 3 fires are currently burning near the community of Whitehawk Ranch. The Smith Fire is currently burning north of California State Highway 70 between Smith Peak and Maybe. Together they are being called the Gold Complex.
Bay Area man dies after being pinned between two trucks on Lake Tahoe's West Shore

On July 22, 2024, at approximately 12:53 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers from South Lake Tahoe were dispatched to a strip mall parking lot where they found a victim crushed between a truck tractor and trailer combination and a Ford F450.

Body of Reno man recovered in Topaz Lake

On July 22, 2024, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Marine units and dive team, along with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, located and recovered 51-year-old Rodney Mitchell of Reno, Nev.
Although drowning is believed to be the cause of death, the decedent was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s office for a definitive cause of death.

The chance for daily thunderstorms continues through Thursday. Storms will be trending wetter through the week with increased chances for localized heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
There will be a cooling trend at the end of the week, with highs in South Lake Tahoe in the low 80s, and possibly high 70s.

US50 impacts due to brushfire in Pollock Pines, forward progress of fire stopped
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/21/2024 - 1:23pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The Ridgeway Fire in Pollock Pines closed lanes of US50 for a while on Sunday, July 21 so firefighters could fight the fire reported just after noon. Quick response from the air and ground stopped the forward progress quickly, and so far seven acres have burned.
Perimeter Map had homes between Pony Express Trail and the highway evacuate, but as of 2 p.m., the mandatory evacuations have been dropped.
A second fire was reported at the same time nearby and small plumes of smoke could be seen at the Alert California cameras.
LTCC addresses concerns about 33-year-old Demonstration Garden

Designed with the collaboration of several agencies, groups, and individuals, the garden was created on seven acres to showcase attractive native and adapted plants while using conservation techniques to address water quality concerns. Several gazebos and sitting areas were added with tree and plant descriptions along a pathway that meandered through the displays.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A mudslide about 100 feet wide and three inches deep has crossed over US50 west of Strawberry. Along with the mud, branches, and other debris also in the slide.
As of 4:45 p.m., Caltrans is sending equipment to clear the mud from Placerville with an estimated time of their arrival in one hour.
Caltrans signage is warning people to not go through the mud and traffic is backing up.

Small earthquakes centered in Lake Tahoe Saturday

According to USGS, there was a 3.4 magnitude just after 8 p.m., followed by 1.5 at 8:05 p.m., and a 2.8 at 8:19 p.m. The University of Nevada reports several small ones during the day, all under 1.0 magnitude.

Forest Service update on Basin Wide Trails Analysis Project

In September 2023, LTBMU initiated a 30-day public comment period for the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Basin Wide Trails Analysis Project. The EA included an analysis of e-bike use and addressed trail system access and connectivity on National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The messages, tested last summer on the Legacy Trail in Truckee and later on the Pope-Baldwin Trail in South Lake Tahoe, encourage users to “share the path,” “keep right, pass left,” and also include more tongue-in-cheek reminders like “we put a man on the moon, surely we can share this trail.” Messages have been stenciled in English and Spanish.

LTCC grad honored with Gene Upshaw scholarship during American Century Championship

The annual award is presented during the celebrity golf tournament in honor of Upshaw who played in 15 of the events, then had to withdraw from the 2008 American Century Championship as he became sick, and died of pancreatic cancer not long after, in October 2008. For the fourth consecutive year, all races in the event both start and finish at Western Nevada College's John L. Harvey Field.
Dubbed as "A Glimpse of Heaven ... A Taste of Hell," the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs, participants compete in 100-mile, 56-mile, and 55-kilometer events, ascending as much as 22,000 feet from Carson City to Marlette Lake before returning to Carson City.

Even slight changes in the ecosystem can have domino effects, such as the cross-cutting threats of aquatic invasive species, algae growth, and damage to native habitats. And global forces are affecting our treasured lake. Scientists report that Lake Tahoe’s average temperature has risen 1.4 degrees in just the last 50 years. Longer periods of drought and low water levels are expected to exacerbate water quality concerns and increase threats to Lake Tahoe’s pristine ecosystem.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – This year marks the 37th anniversary of the Great Gatsby Festival, a multi-day living history and interpretive festival held at the Tallac Historic Site each year. The Great Gatsby Festival is a living history event, celebrating the life and times of the Prohibition Era.
The event was temporarily paused from 2020 - 2022 and was revived in 2023, through a collaborative partnership between the Great Basin Institute, Valhalla Tahoe, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

They will be visiting gardens of all shapes and sizes from a 4-season grow dome to a single-family backyard veggie garden. Suspect arrested after attempting to flee South Lake Tahoe Police in stolen vehicle
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/18/2024 - 9:49amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A suspect from Sparks, Nevada has been arrested after leading officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on a chase through the Al Tahoe neighborhood and into the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center area.
During the evening of July 17, 2024, SLTPD patrol officers received information about a truck that had been stolen in Sparks. At approximately 8:10 p.m. the stolen truck was spotted heading eastbound on Lake Tahoe Blvd., near Al Tahoe Blvd. Officers attempted an enforcement stop but the driver failed to yield and sped away.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Taylor Creek Visitor Center has welcomed the return of the summer evening programs at the Lake of the Sky Amphitheater.
Upcoming programs include a “lively” presentation from Northern California Bats on July 26, and an in-depth look at Lake Tahoe’s black bear population with Toogee Sielsch (Tahoe Toogee) on August 30. A full list of upcoming interpretive programs can be found online.
Recipe Highlight: Embracing Okra with Southern Fried Okra

It contains mucilage, which is a naturally occurring substance that acts as a thickener for stews or gumbos, of course. While some are off-put by this, others find its unique texture perfect for roasting or frying. Quick roasting and dry heat can help minimize the sliminess. It also has a peach-like fuzz on the exterior and a mild, somewhat grassy taste. Okra is commonly used in soups, canning, frying, roasting, or boiling.

On July 19 at 2 p.m., Jordan the Science Wizard will perform his Super Cool Chemistry show, including melting, oozing, bubbling, and foaming science fun.

Reverse 911 system fails during Douglas County's Spring Valley Fire
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/17/2024 - 12:39pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - There was a glitch in the Douglas County Reverse 911 software during Tuesday's Spring Valley Fire so wireless alerts were unable to be transmitted to residents during a critical evacuation notice.
County officials said this unforeseen technology issue posed a significant challenge. However, Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies and the Douglas County Search and Rescue team were able to conduct door-to-door notifications to alert residents promptly. Their swift action ensured that residents were informed and able to evacuate safely, minimizing potential risks.
