Retired South Lake Tahoe teacher creates song as plastic water bottle ban goes into effect

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The trash left behind on Lake Tahoe's beaches after the 4th of July last year led retired South Tahoe Middle School Krissi Russell to write the song, Just Drink Tahoe Tap. Now with the plastic water ban going into effect in South Lake Tahoe on April 22, she wanted to share the positive message.

Krissi, a long-time Tahoe local, taught Spanish and English Language Development at the middle school for 28 years. She is a singer/songwriter, an advocate for the lake, and a children's book author.

Drug Take Back Day on Saturday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK) and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) will hold Drug Take Back Day on Earth Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Community College.

Bring your unused medications (pet and human), along with over-the-counter pills. No needles will be accepted.

Grand opening of Wolf by Vanderpump held at Harveys Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Restaurateur Lisa Vanderpump hosted a grand opening on Thursday at her latest restaurant, Wolf by Vanderpump at Harveys Lake Tahoe. The long-anticipated restaurant is next to Hell's Kitchen on the casino floor. To commemorate the occasion, the television icon surprised guests with an extravagant “white carpet” arrival alongside her dog, Marky, as they made their way into the venue where guests were treated to a taste of the stunning new restaurant.

Lake Tahoe musician creates Mother Earth song to inspire change

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Liz has been working on a new album for over a year and she wrote "Mother Earth" as one of the songs for that album. She had finished writing the song when she saw the videos of the thousands of pounds of trash left on Zephyr Shoals on the 4th of July.

"It made me sick just like everyone else that saw it," Liz said of the viral video.

31st annual Best in Basin awards nominations now open

Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev. – Nominations are now open for the 31st annual Best in the Basin awards. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is looking for nominations for projects that display outstanding environmental design and were completed in 2022 or 2023.

Nominations are due by May 17 at 5 p.m.

TRPA’s annual Best in Basin awards program showcases projects and programs around the lake that demonstrate exceptional planning, implementation, and compatibility with Tahoe’s natural environment and communities. The categories are:

Prom tuxedo rentals available at temporary Sidestreet Boutique

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though Sidestreet Boutique has not reopened since the roof collapse last winter, they will be open this prom season to help with tuxedo and suit rentals.

Both Whittell and South Tahoe High Schools will be having prom in the upcoming weeks, and those needing tuxedos and suits can get them in South Lake Tahoe and not have to travel off the hill.

The sizing, pickup, and returns of rented items will take place at 4000 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Suite 22 in The Village Center adjacent to Ace Hardware.

Kudos: Drug Store Project thanks South Lake Tahoe community for another successful event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Big THANK YOU to the South Lake Tahoe community for another successful Drug Store Project this year for our 6th-grade students from South Lake Tahoe Middle School, George Whittell High School, Diamond Valley Elementary School, and local homeschool youth.

Altogether, 160 agency personnel and community volunteers plus 285 students and the school staff gathered on the Lake Tahoe Community College campus for the 21st annual Drug Store Project.

This event only happens because of the support of our Tahoe community.

South Lake Tahoe Earth Day returns to LTCC

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Festival will be held at Lake Tahoe Community College on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is outside near the Roberta Mason Library.

The event is geared toward all ages and recognizes, celebrates, and promotes the Lake Tahoe Basin's unique beauty while educating the public on how to preserve and protect it.

This is one of the largest environmental education events in the area, providing residents and visitors an opportunity to learn about the various environmental issues that affect Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historial Society is holding another of its popular Tahoe History Talks on Tuesday, April 16 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Museum Complex. The speaker is Peter Goin, a UNR Foundation Professor of Art in photography and time-based media. The topic of his talk is "Lake Tahoe: A Rephotographic History."

Goin is the author of several "then and now" photography books on the Lake Tahoe region where he and his students explore photos of locations in the past and find the same spot today.

Planning underway for the 2024 Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series

Group against proposed vacancy tax in South Lake Tahoe plan protest

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Those opposing the proposed $6,000 vacancy tax in South Lake Tahoe are invited to join others against the tax in planned protests on April 2 and April 3.

Signatures are being gathered to get the initiative on the November ballot to tax homes in the City that are vacant six months or more during the year.

A few South Lake Tahoe residents will be demonstrating against the proposed tax, a penalty for owning a vacation home and are unable to vote on the tax measure, if on the ballot.

Tahoe Elite Cheer Team is now accepting sign-ups for the next cheerleading season. This is their second season, following up on their very successful inaugural competitions. Ages 4-18 are welcome and no experience is necessary.

The famously dark skies over Lake Tahoe offer an unobstructed view of the night sky, and this summer Tahoe Star Tours is expanding its schedule to invite more people for docent-led explorations of the cosmos. Events will return to Cosmoarium locations at Northstar California Resort and the Spooner Lake Visitor Center on Thursdays and Saturdays from June through September.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join the South Lake Tahoe Library at its next free program for the public, Tahoe Big Year - Birding Lake Tahoe, on March 26 at 5:30 p.m. Sarah Hockensmith from the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will be introducing the 2024 Tahoe Big Year, a year-long birding event that celebrates the hundreds of bird species that occupy the Tahoe Region and brings together birding beginners and enthusiasts alike.

Inaugural Mother Son Spring Fling Dance

It will be a memorable evening of love, laughter, and dancing at the inaugural Mother Son Spring Fling Dance on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. in Blu Nightclub at Bally’s Lake Tahoe. Sons are welcome to bring their “plus one” including, but not limited to, mothers, grandmothers, aunties, older sisters, bonus moms, stepmoms, supermoms, and the list goes on. Organizers can’t wait to see mama moves and son grooves as they dance the night away!
