SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Entries are now open for the 9th Annual WordWave Lake Tahoe One-Act Play Competition. The winners each receive a $500 cash prize and two nights lodging in South Lake Tahoe to see their work directed and produced on stage at the historic Boathouse Theatre at Valhalla Tahoe.

Submit projects or programs that display outstanding environmental design and compatibility with Lake Tahoe’s environment. LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - On a sunny Saturday morning, 100 volunteer participants fanned out across Lake Tahoe’s South Shore to take water quality samples from 34 streams, creeks, ponds, and lakes to monitor the health of the Truckee River watershed and Lake Tahoe as part of the 24th annual Snapshot Day. They were joined by teams doing the same tests simultaneously in other regions of the watershed.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - For the last several months, El Dorado County Supervisor Brooke Laine has coordinated a 13-member advisory group of locals to evaluate the current Vacation Home Rental (VHR) situation and find solutions for any problems that have occurred since its implementation. All viewpoints on VHRs were represented on the advisory group, including those against and for VHRs, and those in the industry.

The Supervisors met in South Lake Tahoe for its weekly meeting on Tuesday, with VHRs one of the Tahoe Basin-focused agenda items.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Education Foundation (LTEF) is inviting the community to their Celebration of Education event at Lake Tahoe Golf Course on Thursday, May 16 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

You'll hear talented Performing Arts students and taste the Culinary Artists' creations. Also, be inspired by Ryan Wallace of the documentary Momentum as he gives the LTEF inaugural 'Ed Talk,' and celebrates this year's Hall of Distinction honorees: Grant Carter, Susan Baker, Ruth Rich, Austin Angell, and Wendy David.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next scheduled meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council on May 21 has been canceled due to a lack of an in-jurisdiction quorum. In order for remote participation by council members, three of the five would have to be in the council chambers. In the case of May 21, only two would have been.

The next council meeting will be held on June 4 at 9 a.m. Agenda items originally scheduled for May 21 will be moved to that date.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The women of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) have launched their online auction, the top fundraiser for the group celebrating over 47 years of serving the local community.

The auction is full of over 300 items to bid on, from massages and gifts to unique opportunities. All bids will be accepted until 5 p.m. on May 24 when the auction closes.

The California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) uses National Safe Boating Week May 18-24, 2024 to emphasize the importance of responsible boating practices and water safety awareness at Lake Tahoe and across the state.

As temperatures warm and with the Memorial Day holiday coming up, boaters will start to gear up for the summer season of adventure, and DBW and the U.S. Coast Guard are sharing the top seven tips for safe and enjoyable boating experiences:

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Plan received a 2024 Project Excellence Award from the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals (SORP) during the National Outdoor Recreation Conference held in Stateline last week. The award recognizes the dedication and innovation of individuals and organizations in advancing the outdoor recreation profession while upholding SORP's values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; sustainable recreation; people; community; collaboration; and skill development.

MEYERS, Calif. - For a few hours, leopards, butterflies, world-class athletes, and Tahoe-style entertainment will take over the Old Meyers Grade for the 8th annual OMG Fun Run. Registration is now open for the OMG (Old Meyers Grade) run on Sunday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Coordinated by Realtor Ellen Camacho, Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty has hosted four Adopt A Day of Nourishments (AAD) sponsorships annually for several years. The most current sponsorship meal was held on Monday, May 6, and once again Sierra Sotheby’s sent an excellent volunteer crew to participate in the evening meal service.

In addition to Ellen Camacho, the Sierra Sotheby’s sponsorship AAD crew included returning volunteers Demian Black and Haily Mitchell, and Angie Challenor, who was participating in AAD for the first time.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will have their May 14 meeting in the City of South Lake Tahoe council chambers at the airport at 10 a.m. On their agenda is the discussion of changes to the VHR rental program, the Tahoe Area Plan, and moving Meeks Bay Fire to North Tahoe Fire.

There is a 10 a.m. certain item concerning the County's Vacation Home Rental ordination and updates recommended by Supervisor Brooke Laine and her 13-member community advisory committee.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tickets are now on sale for the second annual Mane Event, a fundraiser for Between Horses and Humans. This youth-oriented nonprofit serves Douglas County and the Lake Tahoe area and teaches kids life skills through horsemanship. The Mane Event is Saturday, June 1 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Cowork Tahoe, 3079 Harrison Ave. in South Lake Tahoe.

The event features live music, an animal meet and greet, food and beverages, a silent auction, kids raffle and face painting, community mural painting, games, and more. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for kids.

Thankfully the warmer weather is approaching. Hopefully, your Liberty Utilities bill should decrease for a while - unless or until another 40 percent monthly rate increase occurs. YES, it’s true. A 40 percent increase in your monthly service slid in starting in January.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Isolated showers and thunderstorms will bring gusty outflow winds, small hail, and brief heavy downpours through the early week with the best chances in the Sierra. Otherwise, it will be drier and
much warmer this week with temperatures more like early summer. Streams will be running fast and cold! Exercise caution if venturing out on area rivers, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
