Anti-VHR group submits signatures to get initiative on ballot

The first of two groups trying to get vacation home rental ballot measures to the voters in November has submitted signatures to the South Lake Tahoe City Clerk. On Monday, April 30, the Tahoe Neighborhoods Group turned in 1,651 signatures on petitions they circulated through South Lake Tahoe. Those signatures will now be sent to the elections department of El Dorado County for certification.

If approved, a measure will be added to the ballot asking City residents if they want to phase out vacation home rentals (VHRs) by the year 2021. This was a grass roots effort that "supports the idea that the people who live here should be the ones to decide what they want in their residential neighborhoods."

Two weeks ago, another group started to circulate signatures to get another measure on the ballot that does not ban VHRs.

The "South Lake Tahoe Vacation Home Rentals Restrictions Initiative" would also be added to the ballot in November should proponents get enough signatures to put it there. It was created by the Sustainable Community Alliance who wants serious regulations, but no ban.
